Update to this:

Brakes now working well and fixed!! Loads of thanks and big shout out to TMD.

Ben read this post, tracked down my order for the rear brakes and called me offering to sort even though he hadn't sold the front brakes which caused the problem. I can't be more complimentary of the guys at TMD, all of them were very friendly and couldn't do more to help.

It would appear the problems were as follows:

When fronts were fitted Urban managed to damage the master cylinder
The fronts were fitted with race pads not road pads so never ever got enough temperature to stop properly
Suspicion that the callipers were fitted without shims to properly centre the callipers on the disks.

Above caused long pedal travel and poor stopping performance to the point it was dangerous.

To be fair to Urban they replaced the master cylinder but from there gave up saying they had checked the pads to ensure they were road and not race pads. So they returned front to normal and said sorry thats all we can do leaving me without the brakes fitted that I had spent £2.5K buying inc fitting.

Then the call from TMD with offer to rectify and now I have some very powerful brakes that work very well. Ben refused to take any money for this despite me offering - very impressed.

I've bought and had fitted lots of bits from Urban Truck (which I'm happy with) but this has been a calamity from day 1. When fitting the brakes they also fitted larger wheels and 18" tyres. They managed to get all the tyre pressure wildly wrong, some of the wheel nuts were loose and the spare wheel nuts were hardly hand tight. This work was subbed out by Urban Truck not directly by themselves so I suppose the moral is to only accept Urban doing work themselves rather than letting them sub out to a third party. Im not posting this without giving Urban a chance to respond - I detailed this in an email to Simon Dearn and Lee Newton last night but no answer or response as yet.

So would happily recommend TMD and Ben and will absolutely deal with these guys again - especially off they could move closer to civilisation in the West Country and not be so far East!!!

@LikeOMG - my experience seems vastly different to yours, can't believe these guys wouldn't have rectified your problems - they rectified mine without even having caused the issues!!!

One happy Defender owner and a happy TMD owner.

Bristol, glad your problem is sorted, & well done to TMD.
As mentioned in my previous post this thread, part of the issue here is that front & rears were purchased from separate suppliers, & did not comprise a comprehensive brake kit for front & rear with everything required to ensure improved braking in line with the not inconsiderable expense of buying same.
It is not enough to simply buy good quality componants,..when ya're talking brakes, it all has to "go together", or there are going to be issues, and sometimes these issues do not manifest themselves until they are discovered in an emergency,....at which time it's too late to discover that something's "not right".
I would never fit brakes that were not part of a "kit" marketed by a reputable company, nor would I fit fronts without rears.
Another issue here is if the faulty brakes were found to be the cause of an accident, you may not be covered by insurance, with what could be devastating consequences.
By the way, I'm not telling anyone "how to suck eggs here", just giving my opinion, which is "Brakes"?...VERY important..
But, Like I said, WELL DONE TMD.
Pickles.

Hi Pickles,

Thanks for the reply.

The kits were both the same kit and both for LR defender, buying from different suppliers just made it harder ultimately to,get resolved until TMD jumped in.

The problem here wasn't the kit, the brakes or the different suppliers but it was the poor execution and installation of the kit. Damaging the master cylinder and supplying and fitting the wrong pads plus potentially not entering the brake callers caused the issue, not the kit itself.

Now this is working properly the kit is very good and would recomend as long as is fitted properly.

Thanks for the kind words and I am glad that you are happy with your brakes now. As for the kits these discs and callipers are made specifically for the Defender, and front and rears are not always needed, but when fitted together they do give the ultimate stopping power, However fitting just fronts do give improved performance as we all know the fronts are the main braking force on the vehicle.
Again thanks for the kind words and I am just happy that we have put a smile back on your face, I knew we could sort this for you as we have faith in all the products we sell, we try to be the best value on everything we sell, but some do not see this as we sell quality rather than items that go wrong.
Every company from time to time gets issues with things, but sorting the issues out to the best of your ability is what counts I think.
