If they're all wired up the wrong way around then probably very little, if any. When you get problems is when different speakers are connected different ways around. They end up out of phase with each other and give a "dead" sound, especially noticeable with bass. You can also get effects where the sound is noticeably coming from the speakers instead of "projecting" into the centre between the two speakers.
Do a search for "speaker phase" for examples and tests you can run. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Thanks Dave. Fitted new rear speakers the 110 and wired them in they work but I was expecting the volume to be louder in the car/hear more from the rear (the front speakers are just above the B pillar)
I have a feeling that I have wired the pos/neg at the stereo end correct but not at the speaker end. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

You can check it with an AA battery - look up a 'pop' test.

It will also often mean the speaker 'basket' will be live when it should normally be earth.
As mentioned, I doubt you'll notice any difference but if one is correctly wired abd the other not it could be out of phase. Normally on a speaker the metal basket should be earth as is the earth terminal, for this reason on a multimeter you could continuity test it to check. However, it's not a guaranteed method as not all manufacturers will wire the same. This is providing you don't have the terminal polarity marked which maybe the case? If the Defender, you can determine the polarity by earth continuity test again. (Be sure that everything is turned off) Live will have no contiuity to earth for obvious reasons and the earth terminal will to a good chassis earth. |

When you say speaker basket do you mean the metal frame the speaker sits in ?
I will check/alter the wiring just in case. Do the speakers need to be earthed? The speakers do have + and - marked on. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

If you connect it to an AA battery the cone will move either out or in - so you can test that they are all wired in phase.

My reason for asking is
Originally just two speakers in the 110, above the B pillar in the head lining. I wanted two more in the rear so fitted a pair of Pioneer ones into the mudstuff mounts. Wired them in and then first real test was the drive to work. I expected to hear something different given the additional speakers, but sounds the same-ish. When wiring the speakers I saw the + and - on the speakers. When doing the head unit wiring I think I wired the wire with the stripe to the wire with the stripe on the HU (stripe being - ? ) but think on the speakers I might have the wires the other way around. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
