I have a Puma with electric windows and a tdi without. The door trim on the Puma is wider than the trim on the tdi so I presume this is to accommodate the motor and electronics for the electric windows. Should be possible to fit but you might need to change the door card aswell. Some counter sunk self tapping screws will hold the new trim on and you can cover the holes for the screws with some trim button tops glued over the holes. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I don't know for certain but I can't think why not. I've done the conversion on the later doors with the push button handles. The electric window mechanism sits in the same place as the manual winder system and I found the easiest way to convert them was to buy the inner door panel that the electric version mounts on. The actual winder mechanism mount on the window was different so I ended up using a part of the original winder mechanism and part of the electric one. I'm not sure if the door cards are any deeper on the electric ones, I don't think they are because I'm pretty sure I used the original door cards while waiting for the right ones to pop up on eBay. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I've 1985 lift up handle doors and want to fit electric windows when I redo my doors as getting fed up of sweeping rust out when I get in.
I'm sure I've seen posts in the past about doing it so taking it as possible and just need to decide to go down the generic kit route or as per one of the prev posts, and use a new LR inner panel to mount the motor and assorted fixings to. Also conscious a lot of the parts for the early doors were superseded and no longer available. 1984 90 V8 puma want to be. |

Are Puma and earlier inner door panels the same size? chatting to a guy a while ago he mentioned he'd bought brackets to add Puma electric windows to his 300 tdi. Something like this I believe

Short answer is I don't know, I've been led to believe they are but not sure why I think that. I know Lucari do a window kit for later models https://www.lucari-solutions.co.uk/catalog...tegory/67/ so in my head they must be otherwise this would work for mine???
I might take my door card off at the weekend and take a photo to look. Slightly worried at doing it in case I find its all dust..... 1984 90 V8 puma want to be. |

I've been working on an '84 Ninety (lift-up handle) door and more recently a very early (1990) Defender door.
I cannot answer your question, except to warn that the earlier door is much thinner in profile than the later door, so you may need to be sure any new mechanism will fit between the card and the door-skin on the thinner door - unless you want even less elbow and knee room. |

Its not the gap between the skin and the card you need to worry about. It's less than that as you've only got the gap between the glass and the card to play with. On a slightly different track, I fitted central locking to my lift up handle doors and it was tight with the locking solenoid, they are against the card and the window mech just misses as the window drops.

Thanks Horneteer, so I guess the challenge is now to find someone who has done it and posted about it from sometime in the last 30+ years

Humm not as much info as I'd hoped. This is all I've found so far however a couple of posters to say they'd done it and what they used. Seems its possible, or was in 2013.

It might not be as straightforward as you think. I found that the manual lifting systems from a 1984 door and a 2003 td5 door are so much different that I used the 2003 window as well.
The metal inner door plates are different too. I am believe I had to drill some new holes to fit the 2003 manual mechanisme.
