Puma service what oils / specifications.
Hello

Just had a price back for my local garage (who has service my last cars not a specialist) to do a full service on the DEfender changing all oils.

Engine Oil
Gearbox oil
Diff oil
Brake fluid

120 plus vat plus parts, I can provide parts or he can.

If I provide the oils etc what do I need? type / specification. Would you provide the oils or just let them do it?

Anything else to ask them to check / grease etc (swivel arms?) while its on the ramps?

Thanks

Sorry good point,

Its a 2.4 Puma.

Is there a complete kit I can buy rather than searching for all the different oils?

Thanks

I've gone on opie oils and chosen this lot.

Which is 98.66 including vat

This should do the diffs, gearbox and engine.

The this kit for the filters

38 ex vat (45.60)

So 98.66 plus 45.60 = 144.26 in parts inc vat (this does not include brake fluid)

120 for the labour part plus Vat. 144

Total 288.26 inc vat for Service, All fluids changed and air / fuel filter. Sounds ok? as this all should not need doing that often?

Duckworths do a service kit for the non-oils (if you want "genuine"):
http://www.duckworthparts.co.uk/landrover/..._Kits.html

Usually I buy oils from Opie Oils:
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-2354-lookup-re...ilter=2011

Much cheaper than Halfrauds...

Full details of all oils here including the service schedule:
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic8707.html

WRT to the service schedule...
1. Do engine oil and engine oil filter every 12 months / 12000 miles (Service A)
2. every 2 years or 24000 miles, I do the air filter, fuel filter, diff, transfer and gearbox oils... (Service B)
3. every few years (3 or more) do the brake fluid & coolant

Land Rover recommend only changing diff/gearbox oils very infrequently (80k km or something.. detaioled on the service sheet in the post above)
If you want to be lazy, and but all-in-one, I would phone Dan at Duckworth and see if he can to the full kit... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Hello

My cars on 68K and I think the service actual due 72K although full service history no ticks in the book what was done on the last service just a stamp.

Given this will probably be kept, no harm in changing everything for new? plus in August its off to Europe for a road trip.

I think I've chosen all the correct oils off the thread you mentioned although the service kit is a lot more from Duckworth than the premium version of Landrover specialist site?

Think I've got all covered except the brake fluid. (1L for around 10)

So just shy of 300 inc vat all done?

Oil
Diffs
Brakes
Gearbox
Oil filter
Air Filer

Anything else I've missed

Definitely -I would do a full "B" service, all oils, engine oil filter, air filter, fuel filter...

Probably would leave the coolant and brake fluid though... they can test brake fluid (you can buy a brake fluid condition meter for a few ) to see if it is contaminated by water - if not contaminated...no need to change it...

Hard one to argue regards which filters to use. I buy from Duckworths. LR don't make filters I guess, so a good quality brand is probably the same item at less cost.

But as it's only 15/year cost difference, personally I'll stick with genuine filters... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I get my service items from Advanced factors. LINK
They do full OEM (Mahle) service kits with or without oil. (I get my oil from Halfords - the Mobil with a trade card is the cheapest I can find.)
They also list gearbox, diff oils and antifreeze etc.

Remember that you don't need all the oils changing on every service.
- Engine oil/filter every 12k miles/1 year
- Fuel/air filter/brake fluid every 24k miles/2 years
- Axle/transfer oils every 36k miles/3 years
- Gearbox oil/coolant every 120k miles/10 years

Theres a service checklist on the forum somewhere with other checks which the garage should carry out on each service as well. Tom

Is the 'B' for Big Service.

Think I would be happier, don't know if its be but its sounds a little nosier / dryer from the back so would like it looking at.

Do the oils I have chosen for opie oils sound correct and quantities.?

Many thanks

Stacey - they all look like Engine Oil to me...

Engine: You need 7 litres of Engine Oil (with a filter mine goes over 6 litres)
Gearbox: Uses 2.2 litres GL4. I used Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic MTF (so you need 3 litres GL4 75w90)
Transfer Box: (2.4 litres). I used Fuchs Titan Race SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (was Silkolene SYN 5 75w-90) - this one's GL5 (so you need 3 litres GL5 75w90)
Front & Rear Diffs: Castrol Axle 'EPX' for the Diffs (1.6Litres per Diff) so 4 litres total.
