2nd hand steering box - refurb it even if in good nick?

Hi all,

I've just bought a second hand steering box on the bay (mine is foobarred). Seller says in good working condition, dry and no leaks. I happen to have a refurb kit for it in my 'box of stuff' in the shed.

Question is, should I fit the kit or just whack it in and hope it doesn't leak (as in, it works better than what I have)? Will fitting the new kit more likely encourage a leak/failure?

PS. It's not new or reconditioned as 15 month old baby with another on the way dictates I tighten my money belt

That's the route I was thinking.

Maybe i'll take the old one off and give it a good looking over, maybe fit the refurb kit to that. It will be a learning experience and means I have one spare... for 2 weeks time when this 'new' one will inevitably fail

(although now I have a spare of course it won't fail)
