Odd happenings today
I was picking up some stone setts for the drive today which were from a house on a quite steep hill. When trying to get up the hill with a small trailer on but nothing in the trailer I had no low down torque even in first gear and basically had to rev the nuts off the engine and slip the clutch to get it moving Big Cry as I had to reverse up another hill I ended up cooking the clutch with the revs I was having to give it, and couldn't get it out of gear until it had cooled down. A good amount of black smoke was also coming out when revving and under load. Does this sound like turbo failure as that was my first thought but even when the weight was in the trailer the engine pulls nicely on flat roads and smaller hills it just seems not to have any pull up steeper hills and doesn't pick up well when dropping down gears for hills. Any ideas greatfully accepted.

Sorry for the essay

Cheers

Did you use low box to pull the trailer up hill? Landrovers might be tough powerful work horses but a bit of mechanical sympathy still goes a long way. A mate of mine used to have a power boat and would rev the nuts off his cold defender to pull the boat up the steep lane from his house when taking it out. I always cringed and then one day I slipped it in to low box while he was hitching up. When we set off I told him what I had done and at the top of the lane he turned to me and said he couldn't believe how easy that had made the climb. It gives the clutch much less work to do.

I didn't but this was on a normal steepish road with an empty light trailer on and it was stalling in first gear. We ended up using the mrs tdci double cab which had no problem pulling the loaded trailer up the hill. Ray

I get this phenomenon every so often with mine, I can be across fields, stop to do something or talk to someone then when I start up and go to drive away it's nearly prudent to start off in low box especally if it's slightly uphill or it's sunk in a bit.
I think it's a bit to do with driver error, I have put myself in the same position and tried a different approach namely let the clutch out before adding any throttle. It goes completely against what you feel you should do and there are times when you don't think it will work but as soon as you apply throttle when loosing the clutch the anti-stall feature is knocked out. It is fairly rudimentary on the Td5 but it dos work but it goes against everything you feel when pulling off with a loaded trailer etc. Even 1st high will see you slipping the clutch way too far for comfort so it would be better to pop it into low and flip it back a little later.

That's the thing though it did stall, the anti stall didn't seem to work. The Mrs's just drove up the same road with the trailer full in high box without a problem. I've noticed on some hills lately that I have to change down through the gears a lot earlier than normal and then the engine just feels flat until I get into second or first and this is just everyday driving Neutral Ray

Have you checked intercooler hoses and the waste gate to make sure it's not stick open or a split hose ?

It's had recent silicon hoses but I've not checked the waste gate yet. I've got a new turbo to go on when it goes in for its service which I got because the waste gate stuck a couple of times but when it stuck the engine just felt down on power it never failed to go up a hill before. Ray

When was the fuel filter last changed? Just an idea.

My 90 stalled in 1st gear when the clutch was about to die, just came hope went down to first gear to enter driveway and then just cut going uo a slight slope.

No symptoms at all prior except on the same trip the clutch was slipping I.e. Gear engaged and then drive taken up a second or so later, I could tell it was going but that quickly.

Hopefully it won't be that for you though.

Full service less than 6000 miles ago and new clutch 10/15 thou ago. It's the complete loss of torque that worries me as the clutch problems I'm sure were brought on by me having to rev so high and slip the clutch to get it going. I just googled turbo failure symptoms and the first post came up with loss of power and black smoke from the exhaust within the symptoms so they fit with what happened to me. I've ordered oil and filters today so I'll get it booked in for a service and throw the new turbo on and see if anything is fixed. Any more ideas appreciated.
Cheers
