The USA has a free trade agreement with Mexico as part of the North America Free Trade Agreement. It also has a free trade agreement with S American countries such as Peru.

The USA does NOT have a free trade agreement with the EU. This has been under discussion for a number of years but is nowhere near completion. So the chances of a Free Trade Agreement being concluded quickly between the USA and the U.K. outside the EU is basically non existent. The EU without the UK is at least 10 times the market place of the UK

Now the difference in expression back of the queue versus back of the line? Now one part of 'translating' is that the person doing the translation is a native speaker of the language it is being translated into. So the White House has a speech writer who is tuned into the different nuances of UK and American English?

Just coming towards the end of our holiday, driving from la to newyork in a Mustang........
In what is approaching 2500 miles thus far, the only signs of any export out of the U.K. Has totalled a dozen minis and probably the same number of landies.
I don't think that a trade embargo will stuff us too badly......

I wonder what the American reaction would be to a British Prime Minister going over there and telling them what to do? They didn't like it much in the 1770s and I doubt anything would have changed now.

As a friend who is nearly 95 told me yesterday, the In/Out vote has got to come from your instinct and gut feeling. There's no 'undecided'. I agree with him completely.

No one could say anything about the EU that would change my mind about the way I'm going to vote. It's the way I feel, not a decision to be weighed up after listening to a load of vested interests.

For what it's worth, a snap poll of members on another web forum I use has around 3 to 1 in favour of leaving, a figure I fervently hope will be repeated in reality in June.

The truth of the matter is that no-one knows what will happen with any certainty, because no-one has ever done it before.

However, there is irrefutable proof that leaving would be a good thing - Tony Blair wants us to stay in...!

From a personal point of view, I really want to know what would happen to the SFP if it was an out vote. No plan seems to be in place for farmers in the event of an exit Confused

It's about time we hear some of the reality of leaving, for too long we have some arbitrary numbers and wild assumptions on life outside Europe and how great that would be, how great we are so everyone will want to do stuff with us.

Obama isn't telling us how to vote he's giving some info on the consequences of the decisions we make.

Personally the money savings (or most likely none savings by the time everything has been screwed) are insignificant to the impacts of not being inside a group that will continue: the impact on business, impact on travel, loss of freedom to move, loss of many of the positives that we don't see,or remember, like being able to have anyone service your car or reduced roaming charges etc.

The simple fact is we know what life's like in Europe, we can input into the decisions and shape change, things could stay the same (and they aren't that bad) hey they could get better remaining in Europe...if we leave things might be ok, but leaving is the only scenario where we risk things getting worse! Short, medium and longterm.

Finally, we need to remember the moral elements here too - we need to stop being so selfish and money oriented, little Britain, we're all the money is ours, screw everyone else...it is not a place I would want to live!

Let's pray we stay Mike

Not sure politics and a Land Rover defender forum mix.

But mse makes quite a lot of sense and without insulting anyone.

Will miss coming back from France with a 110 full of wine and chocolate. Across on the disco3 forum there's the same brick up the tunnel attitude.

Joetheplumber - "However, there is irrefutable proof that leaving would be a good thing - Tony Blair wants us to stay in...!"
They all do, they all have vested interest. They all want the average public to believe it is their interests to stay in too.
It isn't it's the super rich and the super rich trade that does.
Look how LR turned out now it's owned by India, Defender thrown out and chase the rich buying a new FFRR each year.

Fatboyslim - "No plan seems to be in place for farmers in the event of an exit Confused"
Well currently, although I'm not expert with milk prices at rock bottom and a in-ept govt that does nothing for anyone bar the super rich that's an issue in its self.
EU subsidies are an excuse for th UK govt to not subsidies it's own farming and pocket the difference.
And last but not least why the hell aren't we selling more British produce over here.
No we have German Lidl and Aldi etc selling their cheaper goods from Europe and lowering and lowering the prices for British farmers.
Unless we as a public do something about it we are creating our own demise.

What you've got to bear in mind is exactly WHO encouraged Obama to do it though.

Exactly.

And also I agree with MSE that it's not a threat - it's consequence. Why he would say that, see above.

If you get a massive wobble on because Obama told you not to do something, and also say 'I've never liked Obama' - I'd say you were probably coming at the angle from somewhere slightly biased Mr. Green

We are no longer GREAT Britain. We were because of our Empire, that's gone. If we think we can repeat it by going alone then we have a bit of a wake up coming. New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

I find it very ironic that he has so much to say on the matter when he wont be president by the time any real effect of us leaving or staying comes in.

It would be very interesting to find out what Clinton, Trump, Sanders and Cruz have to say on the matter, unfortunately one of them will be the one we have to work with.

I think he will be pleased to leave the UK once this visit is done, he is getting a lot of difficult questions and pressure.

Obama out

No not in fact, my feeling on the man do not have any bearing on my opinion on his speech-making, which in my thoughts was wrong, and let’s face it were not his own words, but spoon fed into his mouth by a desperate Prime Minister’s office trying to cling on to Cameron’s belief that the European Union is the universal panacea of the now British existence.

My view also is that I was under the impression this referendum was a matter for the British public to decide and if any bias was shown then it was from the President of America.

Sadly up to now the debate has been marred by politicians and business leaders with their own agendas and who are treating the British public as fools.

The British people are a stolic race, the definition meaning ‘we do everything for the best and that any advantage is sufficient for advancement’, and thus I feel that should we leave the restraints that the EU places on us we would see perhaps a resurgence of what it is to be British once again, instead of the pseudo Britishness we have endured since joining the slowly decaying dinosaur and monetary vacuum that the union has become.

If we have now become a race of people who fear change, who believe what we are told without thinking it through and a people who cannot rationalise what could be good for us and the reasons why, then perhaps we should stay in a club where scraps are fed to us at the table and where the greater good is not metered out without favouritism but is instead to restrain us and to keep us in an ever spiralling chasm of despair as to who rules us and why. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Clinton has said similar to Obama and without any link to being told what to say it would appear - i think Trump has said it too Sad

I do recall we all made a big fuss about Trump and if he became president - i dont think this is any different to any state's leader making a statement

The biggest issue as i say above, people dont appreciate the wider benefits and advantages of being in Europe, focusing solely on the money and applying days of old approaches to a new world doesnt cut where we are any more...i dont know the benefits - but i do know of some and if there are some, there will be more.

As an example, If JLR left the UK, because they couldnt export as easily, import talent, move around etc etc that would be bad - worse than bad, if any company relocated that would be bad - the impact would be huge and there would be little for years that could be done - but the moral side, the friendship side the joint and common goals with our European friends should be the focus to stay.

Unfortunately there is a belief that Britain is better than others in Europe, this isnt the case - its not even about better and worse...the change in some of the ideals around Britain has not happened because of Europe - its happened for other reasons that will continue in or out.

We need to focus on friendship, joint working, joint interest and changing within. I would feel proud to be a British European and happy to engage with our Europeans as a friend, colleague and equal.

One final point - if we believe our politicians have our best interests at heart and would be better out of Europe to let them do more - i fear we are deluding ourselves, France, Germany and others all ensure their countries are put first and apply rules as required to that end. Europe tried to protect our steal - but it was our own country that turned it down.

Lets be friends and change the club from within. Mike
