Fitting New Thermostat
Any tips on fitting a new thermostat and how to minimize fluid loss?

Do I have to drain the whole system or can hoses be clamped?

Thanks

Referring to the manual, the system has to be drained to get it done. It is explained quite precisely. In case you catch the fluid in a clean bucket you can recycle

Btw, I am talking about PEM100990K/PEM100990K. There exist more than one thermostats on that vehicle.

Yes that is the thermostat. I had read the instructions in the workshop manual but wondered if it was feasible to clamp a couple of the hoses so only to have a small loss then just top up.

You can easily clamp the drain hose, however it'll likely drain from the thermostat it's self instead.
I'm not clear on as to how or where there are the exiting hose the other side for this.

If you do clamp it you'll likely find and air lock in it anyway if you replace it.

I would drain the system, as mentioned above keep coolant clean and re-use, use. A funnel with a filter. (This is what I did.)
To re-fill and bleed isn't difficult, the WSM makes a faff of a fuss about it more than it is.

I was put off doing it myself due to complexity but it isn't too bad at all.

The hose clips/ clamps are the biggest pain.

Thank for the tips - will hopefully give it a try this weekend if the new thermostat arrives in the post.

I have some pliers for hose clips so hopefully that will help.

Finally got to changing the thermostat in the Sunday morning sunshine - Saturday had been sleety snow showers most of the day...

Easy enough job - took a couple of hours all in with setting up, coffee and bleeding and test drive. Glad I bought the remote hose clamp pliers - they made it a lot easier than it would have been without.

I just drained from the fuel cooler as the other drain point on the oil cooler looked a bit trickier to get to.

Fingers crossed this will sort my running warm issue.
