I would go second hand bulkhead myself.

My son successfully fitted a Puma bulkhead to his 2001 Tombraider, pretty straightforward as I remember, just means loss of opening dash vents.

Thanks Clive.
How did you son get on with things like screw holes for the dash, gear stick location etc Loss of flaps.....could live without, would be one less draught and one less leak I suppose 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I'm not so sure about the details TBH, it was a while ago and I wasn't really involved, I can ask him though and report back.
As far as I know, the gear levers would only be a problem if you were planning to fit the entire Puma dash, I think the engine and gearbox is mounted a little further back on the Puma, or maybe it's just a longer bellhousing, either way it shouldn't be a problem if only using the Puma bulkhead itself into a Td5. |

I was only thinking of fitting the bulkhead and the TD5 dash.
If you could probe for more info that would be a great help. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I'm now doing a puma bulkhead into a 300tdi. the transmission tunnel required some fettling as they are totally different. so be prepared for a little welding. i cut the section i needed out of my old bulkhead and grafted it in. used loads of dinitrol in the process. the dashboard if also different but I got round the mounting points by inserting rivnuts where required.
I never used the vents and it's one less place to rust now. DON'T PANIC |

If you are keeping the car for a long time, then a new replacement bulkhead is the way to go, IMHO

Had a chat with the lad earlier, he said he had to alter the Puma bulkhead around where the Td5 bell housing tunnel goes to make it fit properly, had to open it up a bit and then seal it with tiger seal, also the fittings for the clocks is a bit different so that needed modifying too, all in all no great drama though and nothing that couldn't be achieved with basic hand tools and a bit of common sense.

I read somewhere a guy fitting a puma dash used the disco selector turret and this cleared the puma dash. Moved the hi lo to behind the gear selector.

After much pondering, I am going to go for a Td5 bulkhead and get the bulkhead replaced.
I have had various prices for the job, the most has been £3500 which included a new TD5 bulkhead and 3 weeks work A few garages have been a straight no - don't want to touch the job. The last garage I went to said yup, we can do that and estimated a weeks work. So next is a decent bulkhead from a breaker then either; a) shot blast b) acid dip (somewhere like SPL?) c) leave as is and rub down & repaint 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

But yourself a mig welder and learn to weld. You will never face this dilemma again.

I have a mig but do not feel confident enough to do a good enough job and what also concerns me is the amount of rust inside the bulkhead I can not see. Plus I would rather be working in a garage than in my drive with no cover especially if get to a point where I have no doors, bonnet etc on the LR. 1999 Defender TD5 110

A new Td5 bulkhead is surprisingly well priced, and the best basis for rustproofing for the future , especially if unseen rust is going to be a concern
