N16kct, The camera placement depends to a certain degree on which camera you go for.
I used a wide'ish (I think it was 120°) angle camera which was a dome shape about 22mm (without going outside to measure it). I mounted it under the number plate light by drilling a small hole underneath and feeding the wires in using the same route as the cables for the number plate light - so no drilling and the resistance to weather is already there. It doesn't get dirty or wet which is weird. During winter i did wipe it once or twice but that was mainly cause I was at the back of vehicle I thought I'd do it whilst i was there and not through necessity. I found that this give you a view across the car and better for judging distance or gap between you and the object your trying to park near. I've seen many photos online where people replace the washer jet with a camera and relocate the washer jet. The problem with this is the spare wheel may obscure the view. If you want, I can take a photo of the camera and the view on the screen if that would help? |

That's the main concern for me, I had thought about motorising the camera, In order for it to park in under cover to stop it from getting dirty. But if its fine placed there, then it saves me a fair amount of work  |

Id say thats decent enough
i wonder wether the alpine kit needs to be centrally positioned for the visual markers to work or not ?

You mention that you have started to look at cameras, what I would say is that the 'markers/guides' would be static for an aftermarket camera unless they have developed some sort of module that attaches to the steering. So in theory yes, the camera would need to be central.
If you want, I can dig out the suppliers details of the camera i bought. It uses a standard RCA/Phono connection. |

I think I've made a decision non the .camera, I wanted to keep the brand's the same as I'm odd like that  and also the image quality is supposed to be good. But to be honest anything is better than nothing in a 110 utility! |

i see a problem with the rear camera placement. when reversing at night the glare from the number plate light makes it very hard to see clearly. ask me how i know...

Its not a problem on mine, only when the indicator flashes. |
