Advice for broken gearbox
Some weeks ago I posted in another thread that my Puma was stuck in first gear. This has now moved onto a different problem, so starting a new thread.

Local independent garage managed to free the gear, but it jammed again after a few metres. They took the box out and think it is a broken fork. They have heated it up to get more access to the internals and repair, but are unable to extract. picture below shows what it looks like so far - unable to proceed any further after trying pullers and heat. They think the next step is to cut into it, which seems a bit extreme.

Is anyone able to offer any advice on how to best proceed please?

From the other post, Ashcroft said they could fix it, but unfortunately shipping from here in France looks to be difficult and expensive. Also seems crazy something like this can't be fixed without having to ship across Europe! Should the garage continue and cut? Or there there some other tips I could pass on? As it is on the bench I could take it to a main dealer, but would they likely to be able to do any better?

Any advice welcome. This has been over 6 weeks now...

Many thanks.

Thanks for the link, but it has only done 30,000 miles, so I was hoping to get just the fork changed rather than buying a new gearbox.

I am very sure that there is a workshop manual for that gearbox. So I would first read about the correct procedure to dismantle the gearbox. I would be surprised if it needed cutting - and if it was seized and needed cutting I don't think that there would only be a problem with a fork.

If it were mine I would get an exchange box from UK or a good secondhand. The exchange box should be from someone (I use Ashcroft) who regularly repairs such gearboxes and has the correct spares (particularly shims etc) to put it together correctly.

If you want to see how much your garage knows ask them exactly what oil they intend to put back into the gearbox once repaired. Compare that to the correct spec in the vehicle handbook?

Hope this helps

Search for "GTF MT-82 garageforum.org" on google. If it was me, I wouldn't let the indy botch the gearbox... “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

Ickle - very generous of you, thank you! I am a long way from La Rochelle, but it is much closer than the UK for sure. I still want to try and get this fairly new box fixed though rather than replaced.

Thanks to the others for links to parts and manuals etc. I already have the manuals and so does the garage (and were trying to dismantle as per the manual - which mentions the heating). However, the heating up would not free it, so I was hoping someone that has stripped one of these boxes before may be able to offer some tips of how to finish the job?
