Had a talk with an "old" mechanic and he told me that in times gone by they used to cure leaking gearboxes and poor shifting gears by adding about an ounce or so of Dot 3 brakefluid to the gearbox. Anyone else heard of this? I wonder if it would be of any help to those with poor gear selection in Pumas or is it a no-no with modern gearboxes? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I have heard of this, from what I can understand from the sage who told me its due to acidic nature of brake fluid causing the rubber seals to swell slightly.
Fix's the leak but not forever and once the seal relaxes a bit the leak is worse. I have not used it as a fix as I work on the basis that the reason its leaking is the seal is worn out and needs to be replaced. It was new to me so I was just asking had anyone else heard of it. I am sure there are lots of "fixes" like this out there. I was a little surprised that it is not included in "Land Rover's Working in the Wild" manual as an emergency fix. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I have no idea. I don't even know if adding brake fluid works. That is why I asked the question. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

In Oz I was once told to put a banana in a noisy rear diff to quieten it down.
