Whistling roof bars
What tune? 
Had the problem on my wife's mini. Trial and error, back and forth, and eventually nailed it. Then took a photo for each winter we pop the ski rack on. No problems since. Not sure there's any other way. But her's are Thuile oval bars, so better profile. Not sure about the Mantecs, but I am assuming they're square? If it doesn't go away, perhaps a light bar on the front of the roof section, and fashion/fix a wind-break? No idea if it would work, but similar (albeit lighter design) than those used on Artics... Check for any small holes in the ends of the bars, if there are any put a bit of tape over them and try again.
Years ago on a Renault Autosleeper a customer had a major whistle at that speed, the cause was a 3mm round hole on the rubber high top seal front top corner of the windscreen, a tint blob of silicone cured it instantly. Keith |

On my last normal car I had Thule areo bars you still hear them at speed so I managed to get hold of a wind deflector that sits at the front from america.
Not cheap...but works and is meant to help the wind round what ever is in your rack.  |

Reports seem to indicate that the position of the front Mambo bar can be critical. Do a search on here. I believe the front bar should not be closer then 9-10 inches to the windscreen to cut down on wind noise.
So tape measure time and alter position of the front bar, then please report your findings on here to enlighten others. Brendan |

Are the bars "hollow" on the underside?
I have a "Big Country/African Outback" roofrack - which made a terrible whistling noise on our first ever long distance trip. At our destination I visited a retailer of the specific roofrack who took one look and had the answer. The front crossbars needed a rubber insert. This was just before Christmas and the specific part was not available. I compromised with foam draught sealing strips turned on its side and held in place with duct tape. Noise was gone immediately. Back home I ordered the necessary strips from the local agent - but not arrived yet. |

We had the same problem with roof bars on a Volvo XC90.
I Googled it and one solution offered was to wrap a length of cord around the length of the front bar. It looks a little odd but it has significantly improved to the point we don't notice the whistling any more - though it hasn't gone completely. Previously the noise was pretty bad! |

thanks all - very useful.
My front one of three is currently located level with the back of the front doors so it seems I should move it forward to half way along the front door? Having roof resprayed in a few weeks so will move it then and hope for a slightly less noisy journey! |

Well after trial and error and many moves of the front bar I have now had to settle for it in position just before the roof starts to angle down towards the windscreen. Always whistled on the autoroute in France but never here until I put a different one of the 3 bars at the front. Then it whistled all the time?! Maybe it was slightly twisted? Anyway all quiet now until we return to France which will be the real test!
Would prefer the front bar further forward to support longer loads but the noise was driving me bonkers! |
