ignoring autos what viable options are there....if any?
it would be great in my mind to find a heavy duty 6 speed box that happened to be a bit longer than the existing and could do away with the extension shaft that fails but still having it looking standard. any thoughts / any options out there? |

Why not this.....
http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/mt...t-kit.html It seems a bit much to re engineer a new gearbox to solve the issue when it can be resolved by grease or the Ashcroft mod. |

I think if there was a more suitable off-the-shelf gearbox, Land Rover would be using it. This would avoid the endless number of clutch / adapter shaft warranty claims that they have had to deal with. I think we can be in little doubt that someone at LR is really regretting the setup from that point of view! But, that was clearly the best option at the time the new driveline was conceived from a cost / practicality standpoint. Engineering a completely new gearbox just for this application would have probably been commercial suicide for such a low-volume product as the Defender. The gearbox itself doesn't actually seem to be the major issue (although there are documented problems with the box), it's the driveline that it is part of that causes most of the problems. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Like you say 'cost' - I believe this what lead to the decision on how to chuck it all together.
Perhaps there's a better overall solution that wouldn't take too much engineering but does cost more? I'm not saying the gbox isn't up to it (not saying it is either - my first box failed at 26k easy miles?) but maybe th overall package isn't? Certainly it ain't great? |
