Sounds from what you've said that a 4WD tractor is going to be the only option. Although I'm not quite sure how a Series 3 managed the task, but all the above suggestions wouldn't be able to? Unless it was a very heavily modified Series 3.

Sorry, the Series III is for the shot game and walking guns. It would be unable. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Have you looked at RB44s? We use a couple on the shoot and they are surprisingly capable vehicles. Seem to remember they came from Witham SV and were under £3,000 each

Seem to recall that RBs were not that highly thought of whilst in service? Were there issues around the drivetrain or steering that put the fleet off the road for a good while?

Edit - brakes mainly - http://www.dodge50.co.uk/rb44-story-1.html

Not too sure how a telehandler or digger would be the best candidate as a gunbus/tow vehicle?

If the budget was a little bigger, I'd say an old Unimog 404 would suit your requirements... this one's already got seats in!

Or even an ex-MOD DAF GS 4x4 with the Cummins 6BT in.

The RB44s had brake system issues related IIRC to the front axle which put the fleet off the road for a major rework. That being said, all the recent casts will have had the rework, and the RB44 is now generally considered to be an excellent (and widely under-rated) vehicle.

Certainly not one to discount from any assessment,

No direct experience myself other than a walkaround and tyre kick - but this thread doesn't seem too unrepresentative when you cast around for direct experience:

Surely a tractor (of any type) will be painfully slow when on roads and tracks. Got to go for a cheap towing vehicle (jap pickup, landrover something, etc) for the budget. Something that can be used for other things when not towing the trailer. Or go down lorry/argo route, but it will be unusable for very little else and there will be a sense of humour failure after about 60 minutes of using it.

Local shoot round here that uses this trailer systems asks guns to take it in turns and use their personal towing vehicle to tow. Just about everyone has either a pickup, landrover or similar. This shares the responsibility and as a result the quality of vehicle used is higher. I understand there is a queue of people offering to use their vehicle as it means they don't have to drive round the shoot in the trailer!!!

Don't get a tele-handler, they're next to useless at towing of piste.
A 2WD back hoe/JCB is even worst, they struggle of piste on their own never mind towing as they're just to heavy.
May I add that I have experience of both. 04' 90 Td5 CSW..
