I have loaned my 1994 110 300 tdi to my brother, I hardly use it since its a second Landy.
He lives 30 miles from me and has mentioned that it seems to lose power after running for approx 30 mins/miles, just as he gets to his or my home. On the last occasion, he topped up the oil before departing and re-dipped on arrival after another bout of power loss and black smoke out of the exhaust. As expected, its lost more oil along with the power dip. Any pointers to help prevent blowing this engine. It has just had a timing kit fitted a few weeks ago, before he started using it. Don't mean to be rude, but this topic is of interest to me, and I can't help but thinking some punctuation in dorsetsmith's post would greatly improve the context of it, and be far more helpful. I've tried re-reading that post a number of times to try and work out what is being said, and it makes very little sense. I'm sure we're both grateful for the help, but it is not easy to understand when it is just a collection of words. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Take off the pipe between the inlet manifold and the intercooler, check for signs of oil. If there is excessive amounts present then that is an indication the turbo oil seal has gone, as said remove the induction pipe running from the turbo to the intercooler and check for play in the compressor turbine, if you have excessive movement the that is normally enough to condem the turbo.
If this is the problem a few points on refitting: Renew all seals/gaskets Prime the turbo prior to fitting of the oil inlet pipe (a syringe is best to add the oil) Clean out all the pipes, inlet manifold and intercooler as they will probably be soaked in oil. Finaly to keep your turbo in good condition don't for get run up and run down procedures, ie leave it for a few mins on idle prior to driving and a few mins on idle prior to switching off. Describe excessive oil in the turbo to intercooler pipe. I cleaned mine on 120k and it was evenly wet.

Perfect advice, however ill be honest and say i've never done warm up or cool down on any of my land Rovers. |

You will always have some residue in the pipes on older vehicles, turbos will let some oil seep out, new vehicles should be clean and dry. If you run your finger around the internal section of a pipe a small film of oil will be present on olde wagons, however if you do this and you have a finger soaked in oil then that is excessive.
