Thank you for the kind words! The old beast seems to be garnering quite a bit of fondness on here!

The last couple of days didn't quite go to plan. Pulled up at home to the strong smell of diesel, looked underneath and I kid you not there was a stream running off the diff case. The source of the leak was the hose that runs to the front of the block from the FPR. It was more of a sprinkler than a hose! Sourced a replacement, huffed, puffed and cursed in the dark to get it swapped over, and hopefully it should improve the running, as I suspect that was there all along, just not quite as badly.

Either way, a picture of the new face, with wipac crystals, clear LED sidelights and Wipac spots on the bumper.

Went for a run today with Matt (MGDM4) to compare how mine was running compared to his standard TD5.

We did manage to confirm that it's still quite down on power. Then there was a thud, then there was no power, then all the oil escaped through a hole in the timing case. Now it's broken.

Looks like the timing chain has let go. Apparently that only really happens when the engine isn't built correctly, and someone doesn't loctite the the oil pump sprocket retaining bolt. I won't know if that is the case until I have a look inside, but the engine in it was a recon that has only done 21000 miles!

Thanks go to Matt, who tried to get me recovered, unfortunately his recovery company were less enthusiastic. Tom and his exceptionally quick puma, who happened to drive past and gave me a tow, despite never having met before! And finally to a friend of mine who came out to tow me the rest of the way back to his house, where my defender currently resides until I figure out what to do!

Theres always a silver lining though once you have sorted the engine you'll find something else that needs doing.

Hopefully whether I end up rebuilding or replacing, I should be able to find and cure the latent running issues!!

Here behind a friends defender, on another friends trailer! Defender owning friends are the best kind! I now have to endure much ribbing about this being the second occasion that my TD5 has been rescued by an old 300tdi!

Maybe you should swap the replacement engine for a tdi! 80" 1948

Bowler Tomcat
130 Station wagon

Brief update of the last ten weeks:
Sourced (in the end)
A replacement 15P TD5 engine, 5 injectors, a new flashable ECU, Fluids, gaskets and other stuff, Replacement lower rad hose (don't ask, on refitting it got wedged against the lower pulley. Didn't notice, rubbed through, water everywhere), Replacement thermostat (hot heater!) and many hours of labour (thanks go to my dad, luke off here and several friends)

Then this happened:

Put it all back in to find we couldn't select any gears.

The next day dropped the box to flip the clutch around (doh!)
Then this happened: (Hurrah!!)

Then spent some time tarting bits up and getting everything we took off back on. Went to dartmoor with my scout group over the easter weekend, so between shakedown runs at that I've been back on the road for ~1500 miles.

Next jobs, driveline clunk, footwell leaks, speakers in the rear and sorting the doors!

Base camp was cockingford (Referred to by my old scout leader as the coldest camp on earth).

Groups were out on routes that cover a fair area, but covered Fensworthy, burrator, hameldown, princetown, two bridges etc.
