Not difficult but a sod to get at.
WD40 the bolts the night before and torque them to the right figure when tightening. Never over tighten. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Lowest bolt may be better access from underneath but you need to be fairly long armed. |

Oops, after my round trip to Belgium this week, it appears that my EGR valve which is now 6 years old (was changed once under warranty in the SVX first or 2nd year), is on its way out.
The ever so gentle chuka chuka chuka cleaning cycle has suddenly turned into a much louder screaching cycle. It is not that there has been a gradual change of sound, really changed suddenly from one switch off to the next... So, even using exclusively premium fuels like BP Ultimate are no guarantee that they will not go wrong or coke up. Guess you can call these things a consumable. Will call the dealer after the long weekend to order a new one and then let them replace it asap. Eric You never actually own a Defender. It's a whole lot easier to do if you remove the inlet manifold!
Takes a bit more time, but makes it less of a fiddle. Plus you get to clean out all the crap the EGR valve puts in there! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

^^^^ Sounds a good idea, or the old crud in there goes straight in the new EGR.
My newer one had an even shorter life so I'd imagine that was the case with it. Very expensive consumables, to my mind not fit for purpose. |

Is it not worth giving it a clean first? I'm not sure why this is seem as a disposable item if you treat the additional noises as a warning to clean. Maybe it should be removed on a periodic/mileage basis and given some preventative maintenance? |

Gunk, brake cleaner or there are a number of products especially for the purpose. I'd be less keen to try something like this: especially on an engine that had a few miles under it's belt. |

When the time comes I will replace it. By the time you've bought that stuff and done all that faff to get a not particularly good result, it can't be worth it.

So, the EGR had this abnormal loud screeching cleaning cycle for a full week. Dealer had everything ready to replace the EGR valve today. When I arrived at the dealer this morning and switched the engine off there, the oh so gentle sounding cleaning cycle suddenly was back. We switched engine on and off again a few times, but the loud screeching sound stayed away... Dealer said they have seen this before, chance that the EGR cleaning cycle suddenly was able to remove some sticking soot. He suggested we don't do anything until it eventually comes back, worst that can happen is to get the MIL light on and engine goes into safety mode. Nothing worse can happen, so they will do the replacement if and when it would come back. We will see, said the blind man. Eric You never actually own a Defender. That happened to me in the past after reverting the EGR-closed map, the EGR was making an awful squeaking sound, even when driving.
A bit of 2SO in the fuel tank got it all sorted quickly, no replacement EGR needed. And at 6.5 years and 93thou km, it's still on the original EGR and it's still working fine as far as I can tell/hear. I also noticed that premium fuel actually make the matter worse, as if it was running dryer. Regular (branded still) fuel with a bit if 2SO from time to time and all is fine. “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |
