What do you mean with "silent"? In any case it should perform cleaning cycles after switching off. Whats the brand of your EGR?

Mine's the same: the normal chucka chucka chucka on switching off now occurs occasionally when driving, more so when - as you describe - the clutch is depressed. I'm of the si fractum non sit, noli id reficere school, i.e. I wait until something physically breaks, then I know exactly what to replace. But can an EGR failure cause other problems, perhaps a breakdown? What's the worst that can happen? Peter |

Multiple failures if the EGR does not close completely. In my opinion one of the most malicious parts. RTFM.

The EGR if it has issues should flag up the MIL Amber light on dash.
If it does, it may go off. Ultimately at some point though it will come on and stay on which is an MOT failiure. If the EGR gets stuck closed everything will be fine but you'll have the MIL on all the time which you can't have permanently. mind you it could also mask any other problems too.... If they should arise. If the EGR gets stuck open it'll do the above and be in limp mode and will have awfully poor performance and possibly engine damage if left. Mine shut down, re-mapped and blanked. Buy a few EGR's and counter in the work and you've got a remap paid for and I've never had a squak from mine since thank god. (Pardon the pun) They also have the tendancy to make the engine sound and run like crap and the performance is rubbish. Also can use much more fuel. Good luck getting a torque wrench in there!
At the least they will flag up a load of MAF related errors, as I've found. |

I got a torque wrench on mine, the lowermost bolt is the most difficult though.

It can cause MAF codes to flag up electronically once checked also can affect general performance.
I would say from what you've mentioned you've had the same scenario as I had. 'EGR stuck closed' New Genuine is are £160 which is ridiculous. |

Is EGR stuck closed an issue or likely to effect performance? Is it not just stuck open that's an issue? |

Hornet - Yes, that sounds correct. I know it's in the WSM but I don't have easy access to it on the Tablet.
Supacat - Well EGR 'stuck closed' is likely to be less of an issue and may even partially increase performance as its effectively blanked. However, due to it not being shut off electronically it will be sending fault signals and thus effects the rest of the whole system in. Particular the MAF sensor. It can put various readings about and still affect performance. (Plus MIL) However, EGR 'stuck open' is much more of a worse issue as exact gasses will be exiting through it permanently which is never supposed to be permanently. It will do all of the above and so I've heard have a heightened affect on performance and may even result in breakdown or ending up in a dangerous limp more situation. As I mentioned above, the fact that Genuine are now £160 each for these and that is providing that you replace yourself a few of them and you've got a good tune for yourself that gives you other benefits too. A tune would render it obsolete permanently and blanked, mine has been two years now no problem from Alive. My EGR now is still faulty but because it's shut down it doesn't even matter. I hate to so think what stealers must charge for supply and fit of them inclusive? |

P.S. If you did always secretly want a tune, now would be your excuse to "fix" it to your OH / Wife.
And explain the slightly more expensive permanent fix. Ped finitely recommend Alive though. |
