Oil Pressure Light Continues To Flicker
Hi all,

Hopefully somebody can help me. I am at a loss as what to do.

I appreciate this has been covered on past posts, but many seem to be for older Defenders so not sure if its the same for the Puma. Sorry if it is, but I cannot seem to get a definite solution.

I recently topped up my engine oil with 5/30 as per the manual.
When driving home the oil light on the dash started flickering (coincidence I think?)
After searching the forum I changed the Oil Pressure Switch.
Checked the oil level which is fine.
Checked the oil pressure on a gauge which I understand to be fine.

After around 25 minutes of driving, the light starts flickering again, seems to be when on idle.
Revs at idle are at 750rpm.
If I take it up to 1000rpm it seems to stop, but returns when I come off the pedal to let them go back down to 750rpm.

Is there anything else I can try as its driving me mad and I don't want to ruin the engine. I am not able to do these things myself so I have a great local garage who is looking at it for me.

I have read about failed bearings? But if the oil pressure is OK then I presume it cannot be these.

The truck has only done 37,000 mls on a 2011 plate.

Any help is very much appreciated,

Cheers,

Chris

Hi,

Can nobody help or shed any further light on this?

It is only coming on at idle, at 750rpm.

Clearly I am not a mechanic so any help or advice is very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Puma engines had a recal for the oil pump and pick up pipe, have you found out if your vehicle is within the recall range and been carried out? change oil filter? is yours a 2.2 or 2.4?

The 2.2 needs a certain grade oil due to it having a DPF

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

Its a 2.4 registered Jan 2011.
It had an oil service in November.
I was not aware of the recall, how will I find out if its needed or been done. Is it as simple as contacting my local dealer?

I am very new to owning a Defender, so not up to speed on what to look for or how to sort stuff.

Thanks again for your help,

Cheers.

I think you will find oil pump failure didn't effect 2.4s?
I may be wrong? but if it were mine, I would be taking it out to have a look for any problems with the pump and chain.
Might have a blocked strainer? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Check on topix (search on here) to see your vehicle details and whether there are any outstanding service actions.

2011 2.4 has not had any recalls for this type of issue,

best thing to do is fit a pressure gauge to understand what the actual pressure is and check against the manual. In the mean time it may be worth doing an oil change and when draining the old oil do it by filtering the oil coming out through a fine cloth (check for any evidence of metal contamination) also ensures the oil itself is not diluted or something causing the problem.

I think my idle is slightly higher than 750 what does the manual say it should be?. will check against my scan gauge tomorrow.

you certainly would not expect an issue at your low mileage with a 2.4. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Could it just be the light itself, loose connection, bad earth, faulty bulb holder?

Hi Supacat,

I did think that but as it only happens once it drops below 1000rpm I discounted it.

I suppose I cannot discount anything at the moment, its really driving me mad as I am worried it is going to wreck the engine if I can't get it sorted Sad

Cheers.
