Presuming you have the Ring DRL controller with three wires ?
Red to battery positive terminal (through a fuse) Black to battery negative terminal Orange to positive of one or other side lights The unit is voltage sensing and will turn on DRLs when you start the engine and will turn off a short while after you turn the engine off. The DRLs will not function when the sidelights are on (to comply with the law) Hope that helps |

If you're still stuck and you haven't given the guys at Flat Dog a ring then I'd do so - they always go above and beyond in my experience |

That's a real shame given my own positive experience of Flat Dog. Let's hope Go Beyond can assist |

OK my guys are tying to work it out from the Ring Aurora LED Lighting kit that is supplied with the Flatdog bumper. The info I had was that we needed to take a live wire from the ignition to start the lights. The doccumentation with the lights suggests they have a auto switching relay which when connected to the battery detects a change in voltage during the starting process which will put the lights on. Then when you put the side/main lights on they will go out. Just really trying to find out if I go with the suggestions from Ring in their doccumentation or do something different ( Defender Specific ) any help would be useful. I am not with the unit right now so I cant give you the wires combination. It is the standard Ring Aurora Lighting Unit. LR Defender 110 XS Utility Wagon

From Flatdog to me in answer to the same query
"Three wire connection. Live and earth directly to battery (must be actually to the battery as they work on a voltage drop system) and third wire to the live of the side light circuit (easiest place to connect to is the side light itself)" 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

I have wired it accoding to the doccumentation with the Ring Aurora Lighting kit and as described above. I was under the impression I had to run a wire from the actual ignition switch on the dash but it seems not. All working fine...Thanks for the help everyone, greately appreciated. No reason the permanent live couldn't be wired in to ignition live, would mean the voltage sensing relay wasn't drawing power all the time.

Not done it myself (yet!) But have just wired in the LR OEM harness for auxiliary front lights direct to the battery. It goes across the front cross member under the cooling pack, along the nearside chassis rail where the existing harness is, then into the battery box through the current grommet where the battery to chassis earth lead goes. Easy enough and obvious once you're under the car. Not so sure about side light feed, but was thinking of using a mud stuff piggy back loom for ease.

Thanks Andy - will give that a go at the weekend
The Mud Stuff loom is a good idea, but I've got some waterproof splices somewhere so will use one of those I think. 2020 110 D200 Base - Pangea with satin paint protection 2015 90 XS Station Wagon (sold) 2010 110 XS Station Wagon (stolen) |
