So how do the Norwegian ones hold up to rough handling? I would love a jacket that I can take on clays, lie in the mud at Bisley, not too hot for walking the dog but also survive crawling / smashing through brambles. Oh and ideally be usuable in rock climbing situations Whistle

Hells teeth, what are you getting up to in Surrey? Seems to have become a lot tougher and a lot less Home Counties than when I left 8 years ago. Crawling? Use South West Trains. Rock Climbing? Use the escalator. Lie in the mud at Bisley? Sit in a chair on one of the club house verandas and enjoy an early evening tipple..... Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I may live in Surrey but was made in Wales Razz

Go rough shooting back there, and beating down in Portsmouth once in a while. Rock climbing much more fun that escalators, I don't think the French would like an escalator up Verdon Gorge.

With regards to Bisley - you must be one of those darn summer shooters Whistle. I just tried to find a photo from a couple of years back where shooting was temporarily paused due to the lack of visibility. Because of snow. Ed

There is a basis for it.

I have four, an old Border I had when I was at school and must be about 15 years old or more, it smells a bit and lives in the back of the Landy. A Classic Bedale which is nice and light for everyday and two long coats which I rarely use but generally come into their own in either heavy snow (rarer now I'm in Hampshire than when I was growing up in Shropshire) or torrential summer downpours.

I've never liked man made fibres for jackets, the allegedly "breathable" fabric seems to always make me sweat and get damper than I would do just being rained on...

You're not a Winter shooter until you've done a 48hr Company Strength Live Firing exercise in January at Yakima Artillery Range (160.000sqkm of Washington State wilderness), in Light Role, via 10km insertion and extraction, with all Company Level assets (mortars, grenades, GMPG, LAW etc) supported by US Army Humvess sporting .50cal pintle mounted Brownings and a pair of National Guard A-10s, all at -25c. Shocked Have a good photo somewhere, will tack it down...

Then there's live firing on an Arctic ex in Norway, a handful in Canada in Winter and not to mention the coldest I have ever been in the UK, Big Cry in your homeland in December, Brecon, where I have never seen the sunshine, but have been led to believe it does Whistle :

Having said all that, whilst Ranges are great in Summer, I always preferred cold weather environments for live firing. Summer in Pirbright, the Plain, Otterburn etc, f***ing miserable with the sweat, cam cream dripping in your eyes, midges buzzing, dust, twigs, brambles inside your clothing or stuck to your face. Horrible

But then there's lying in a desert at 50c firing gazillions of rounds with the Yanks in Iraq. No ammo limits with that lot. Fire as many as you can as fast as you can. Hooyah!! Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Barbour wise, i love them for winter season - but all points above are valid.

i wear one out and about a lot (solway/beanforts etc) mainly as i am thrashing through brambles and above all, on testing i found a wax jacket the most efficient material (of what we were testing) at stopping lead shot without penetration or damaging the jkt (esp when cold!) - dont ask we were bored in Germany at the time.

its it going to be wet i wear a paramo smock underneath - now paramo that is quality kit. Cheers

Trumpet Dance, quite right. Better memory than me. 6weeks being rained on in Fort Lewis. Miserable. We were the last/penultimate unit through (I seem to remember) before they cancelled the ex. Jan/Feb 1999.

The NG A-10s were fascinating to watch, but were an outstanding example of 'all the gear but no idea'. We had to stop half way down the range, wait for the DS to check everyone was static, before they were called in. They then did two or three passes as target acquisition before coming in for the actual run. Both did two 'FGA' sorties against tank hulks, and both missed. Nought from four as they might say. We did joke at the time that it was probably because the hulks didn't have British markings painted on the side. But the whole episode took two hours and we were all obliged to stay prone, in the snow, at -25c. Not unsurprisingly some people started getting hypothermic. Amazing planes to watch though (loved them since a kid) and to see/hear the gun (which does sound like a big fart) but worryingly bad skills. Sadly that 'skills' level carried on to a great degree when attached to the US Military in Baghdad. USMC were good, Rangers average, Army and NG though.....mmmm!! Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've a couple but, I must confess, bought for the look rather than the practicality. Bit like my Belstaff, Morgan, Defender and third wife, in fact.

BUT, you can always get them cheap and anybody who pays more than half rrp for a Barbour hasn't looked hard enough. Same goes for wives, I guess.

Not surprised on the hypothermia, National Guard & A10s is more than enough to bring on the cold sweats for anyone in the general vicinity.

Thought I'd see what it was all about & got a pair of the Parjaro trousers. Excellent bit of kit, in fact my favourite bit of outdoor kit.

Great in the woods early in the morning when everything is still damp & great in the Peaks when the rain is horizontal & you still have a couple of hours to go.
