I think it will fail MOT / invalid insurance for road use and all sorts of grief if you do swap them.
I can't think of any other reason than 'LR had to' to spends millions on developing the forward facing seats, Keith |

Thanks for the replies and the info.
Can't see why it would fail an MOT but can understand the insurance issues. I need the extra seats so will continue and send new posts as updates. Cheers. Captains ate. |

I'm looking to add a pair of side facing seats to my 90HT primarily as somewhere for my 10 yr old daughter to shelter whilst at horse / pony events. Not really as transport seats but.... if they're fitted they have to be legit
I spoke to NFU (been insured with them for years) who said no problem so long as my V5 was corrected and the installation was accompanied by an engineers report - i.e. the garage had to fit them, not me, and an invoice must be raised to show what has been done (according to the NFU rep'). There are a lot of smoke and mirrors around the whole seating issue with the Defender and people are correctly concerned. It doesn't help when you get advice from VOSA etc who really don't have a clue. Personally, with the blessing of the NFU, I'm going to risk it and install the seats. Good luck |

You would have to off your head to put a child in a side facing seat, with a lap belt. I had a low speed crunch and everyone was fine in the front but the side facing passenger got a cracked rib.

I obviously can't speak for others but like I said - I only want them for during shows / events so when it's cold or wet my daughter can have somewhere warm & dry to play her games / rest etc. I'm too bone idle to take the seats out whenever I'm travelling so they need to be legit (even if they're not occupied).
Having said that when we go with the horse trailer to the local forests SWMBO will use one while my daughter occupies the front passenger seat. At the moment SWMBO just sits on the wheel arch but remember, we have 3 horses in tow in a 17' horse trailer on single carriageway B roads. If we get to 30mph we're flying along!! |

I think it's fair to say that whats road legal and what car manufacturers have to achieve are two very different things.

If your truck already has front facing seats the wheel arches will be a different shape to standard hardtop and you may find that inward facing seats do not fit.
If you look at Exmoortrim I believe that most (or all) load area seats are designed to fit to the square wheel arches and not the "cut out" ones as fitted to station wagons with forward facing seats. |

Also looking at the photos above - I am pretty sure that the race harnesses used are neither safe or legal.
