P0100-36 Fault Code
My 65 plate Landie 110 went into fault mode on Saturday and first suggestion was a faulty Mass Airflow Meter. Land Rover Assistance who were great and suggested that this code is rarely an MAF fault and is more commonly an issue elsewhere. In my case the dealer identified water in the air intake system as it was missing an essential seal and it had caused a sensor to be damp. The fault code was still there. They eventually located it to the wiring to the MAF sensor that had worn through and was shorting. This may require a new loom! Just thought I would mention it to those who have repeating MAF fault codes occurring. '65' plate Defender XS 110 Station Wagon

I can see that from a tech's point of view, it's easier to change the item than look for a wiring loom fault but the Workshop Manual has the fault finding the other way around:

DTC
P0100-36

Description
Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor "A" Circuit - signal frequency too low

Possible Causes
NOTE: - Circuit FMAF -

* Frequency mass airflow sensor circuit, short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance

* Frequency mass airflow sensor internal failure

Action
Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the frequency mass airflow sensor circuit for short circuit to ground, short circuit to power, open circuit, high resistance. Repair the circuit as required, clear the DTC and retest the system.

If the fault persists, check and install a new frequency mass airflow sensor as required. Refer to the warranty policy and procedures manual, or determine if any prior approval programme is in operation, prior to the installation of a new module/component.

A common one on the Puma fitted engine.

99% of the time it's one of two wires that rub through on the main loom from engine to ECU.
Transits suffer badly from this, I only did one last week.

If it is the wires?
it's fairly easy to test and locate the break, and a simple fix... Wink 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Well they tell me they have repaired it, which I assume has not required a replacement loom. I would be intrigued to know where it exactly had worn through '65' plate Defender XS 110 Station Wagon

Can't hurt to ask them to show you the repair and ask what parts they have used?

Also, if it's worn through the loom once, have they done anything extra to prevent the fault happening again?

If they had found a fault in the loom it would be very easy to spot.
Look for new cable ties, fresh loom tape, or electrical tape.

Usually they break in the largest part of the loom around the top of the engine.
So you have to open it right up to find the wires.

If it has been done like they say, you will see evidence... 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Have had several MAF faults. When the vehicle was still relatively new, I noticed that the insulation on each of the four wires of the MAF sensor is cracked and the bare wires are exposed just where the the wires enter the connector. See photo. At the time I put it down to poor wokmanship and didnt dwell on it for long. I'm guessing now that this may be the cause of the faults I'm seeing (tracking between conductors perhaps?).

On the last occasion, the engine went into limp mode and the engine light came on. I moved the harness and on the next start everything returned to normal (no warning light, no limp).

Would you know if it is a simple task to remove/install the wires in the connector? There may be enough slack in the harness to allow me to reterminate the harness.

Do you know the PNs for the connector alone and for the complete harness? Thank you.
