Chaps,
Apart from the 15mm bolt of extreme awkwardness, any other pointers, special tools or tricks I should know about before I tackle removal of the starter motor ? Thanks |

Just make sure you disconnect the battery first! Its an unfused line straight to the starter!

Or get a small child to do it, their small arms and hands reach the b***ard bolt a lot easier lol

if you battery backed alarm fitted follow battery disconnect procedure

What I have done before now is to disconnect the feed lead to the starter and made it safe thus isolating the startermotor but it is a very lazy way of doing things

I undo the nut from above using a socket set with extensions and a elbow joint thingy.
Then do the rest from below. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

I made it 2 weeks ago - the top nut was 16mm - probably not original. And I was not able to place this nut back. And it was raining, so now it works fine without it. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

So Ive finally gone and done it, biggest grief was getting the engine undertray off !
5 of the 6 bolts came out ok but of course one was spinning and had to be chiselled off Then getting the tray out was impossible ! we'll not before I chopped it into bits with my Dremmel, Ive decided not to put it back on ! Click image to enlarge The top 15mm nut of doom was a pain but wasn't too bad, the rebuild of the solenoid was easy with the X8R kit. The contacts were badly worn, I'm surprised it was only intermittent ! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The last photo shows the awkwardly located stud at the top with the 15mm nut, it is possible to get a socket and extension on it from underneath but very fiddly. With the undertray off you'll find drips on the floor all over the place, at least with the tray on it centered the drip to th floor in one place

I did mine again recently. I found the top nut easiest to do from above. I let the tyres down to make leaning in easier. I also used a air driven ratchet and it was easy 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

Was going to say, not sure how many Td5 starters I've changed but must be getting close to four figures by now I do the top nut from above, lying over the top of the engine with a 15mm spanner.
