Thoughts on cranking delay.
Apologies if this has been asked before - not been able to find anything.

My 2013 2.2 used to crank as soon as the key was turned to the crank position; with no pause.
Now I turn the key to crank and there is a noticeable pause (about a second) before the starter turns.
No clicks, no odd noises, starts immediately when cranking begins. No difference if starting attempted immediately after unlocking or has been left open.

Any ideas? Warranty ending soon🤔

Starter degradation for sure. It will get worse. Clutch dust can cause a failure too. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

If I turn the key straight to crank from off then I get a delay to let the computers catch up.
If I turn the key to on, wait for a bit, then to crank it immediately cranks.

Are you saying to turn on, wait, turn to crank, wait, then it cranks?

At the risk of sounding stupid is the OP sure this isn't due to the colder weather?
Would I be right in thinking that if it's below a certain temperature then the vehicle gives the glow plugs a head start??

Do you wait for the glow plug light to extinguish? Important to do if you aren't already. Don't just hop in and turn straight from 0 to start Cheers, David

Even when warm temps, my glowplug light will come on for about 4 to 5 seconds, a bit longer when it is really cold outside. Understand you have to wait until the light goes off, only then start the engine. Hearsay it is not so good if you crank the engine while glowplug light is still on.
Now, I am the first to admit that very occasionally I forget to wait, but no delay at all then.

Had the same problem with my 2003 Disco TD5, turned out to be a loose battery terminal. Given that the glow plugs are designed to operate for a period of time after the initial light extinguishes for emission purposes, and again during an active dpf regeneration, then it will do no harm during cranking. In fact the initial pre-heat up phase is so quick with a modern glow plug that it's possible to nearly ignore it - maximum preheat time of 2.1 seconds at -20 C (-4 F) or lower and at temperatures above 20 C (68 F) there is no preheat phase (2.2 engine).

My glowplug lights take about 20 seconds to go out?
And on the 57 plate diesel Corsa we have at work that's about 10 seconds, if you just try and start it without the glow it winds over for ages.

Sorry Embarassed - I never wait for the light to go out!! Just jump in and turn key until it starts - which is usually an imeasurable delay tbh.

Not sure why it could hurt but folks get there facts from somewhere and could know something I don't Big Cry

For the 2.4 engine the following is supposed to apply:

"There is a maximum preheat time of 8 seconds at -20C or lower. At temperatures above 80C there is no reheat phase."

Mine takes bloody ages to go out, maybe not as much as 20 seconds but it feels like an age. Even if the engine is hot and has only just been turned off.

Yes, happens when waiting for glow plug light to go out. I have not tried not waiting.
Although yesterday it once started with no delay (the only time for many weeks)!

I seem to recall that I had a delay between turning the key and cranking in my 09 110 - eventually the starter gave up the ghost...
