I suppose the first question is do you need 7 pin or 13 pin? When I ordered my 90SW I asked for 13 pin electrics but guess what, it was delivered with 7 pin. The auto electrician at my local dealer was not impressed as he had to convert and it was not as straight forward as he imagined. I'm sure someone on here will know if its a straight plug and play or not. Defender 90XS SW

Re: Tow bar wiring
i think i will be wanting 13 pin as i think any trailers that i intend to use will be modern with reverse lights etc , unless i am on the wrong track with that train of thought !

No problem - its surprisingly simple on all the LR's but the defender is by far the easiest! Mike

that suits me then !! and re mounting the plug , fit it in the recess in the rear cross member rather than underneath join a bracket ? , after looking at various photos of the above it does look neat , rgds

13 pin needs an extra connection into battery box and on the LR kit picks up a connection off the back off of one of the switches in the dash. Try a search... wiring details have been posted several times. Or track down the LR kit number then go onto Topix for the wiring instructions Thumbs Up

edit quick search shows this which is for 110. Will give you an idea of what is generally involved... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic13747.html?

I think you can also buy a converter to 13 pin for when needed, save altering wiring. Jeff

The wiring that runs to the battery box and dash, is for the caravan functions - fridge, etc...

If you don't need these - then, you can just use the connections in the 9-way connector under the wheelarch.

This connector has all of the road lighting, including reversing lights, and a permanent live.

Note this is definitely a question and not a statement... will it cause a problem at MOT if not all pins are correctly wired and functioning?
I though I had read that now 13pin sockets are part of MOT?

I seem to recall that the MOT Test was updated in 2012 to include towing electrics. Here is a quick quote from an item in a caravan magazine-

There will be a basic security/damage check of 7-pin sockets, but 13-pin sockets will be subject to a full electrical connectivity check and incorrectly connected or inoperative circuits will result in MOT failure.

Best to check with your local MOT Station or VOSA Defender 90XS SW

The branch which goes forward to the battery box is for the ignition switched feed for 13 pin electrics. This branch is still not fitted on my XS Embarassed

Quite why LR didnt provide the required ignition supply at the back as part of the other tow electric connector I don't know Rolling Eyes  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I understood if you fitted the 13pin to 7 pin converter they dont test it because they have to test the car as presented and 7 pins do not get checked. Thumbs Up... i just googled it and it seems like im not the only one who has thought about it.

Fortunately i dont have MOT's Mike
