Burning smell
Hello All,

My Defender is a month old - 400 on the odometer. I had to drive it 140 miles from the dealers the first day I got it. 10mins into the drive I got a burning smell. Got down and looked around and could not find the source so got in and drove the rest of the journey without incident. Today, a whole month later I got the same smell. It does not smell electric or melting plastic. I can only describe it as a burning smell. Appreciate if any of you Landy experts could suggest a few checks I could do. I could not replicate it when I was at the dealers. I do recall the heater was on both times.

I keep revs below 2000 rpm and drive way below the speed limit. I don't think I ride the clutch either. Just wondering if its a known problem / any you have had similar issues.

Thanks in advance!

Not a known issue. Are you sure you are always releasing the transmission [hand] brake fully? Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.

Is it a sulfurous smell? Mileage intervals of around 200 would be the DPF regen'ing, I get nasty wafts of it occasionally when stationary after a cruise. On a separate note mine has a "hot" smell occasionally with the heater on but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a burning smell. Mines got around 6k on the clock now.

Has it had an underseal treatment done at the dealer? It is very easy for some oily wax paint treatment to get onto the exhaust system and slowly burn off. Idea 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

When you say you don't think you ride the clutch, if your foot isn't on the pedal you're not riding the clutch and if your foot is on the pedal once you've changed gear take it off Smile

You don't actually need the clutch to change gear, you get much smoother gear changes without by just matching the revs.

Yes, Zagato did a great job with it a few weeks ago.
Doesn't explain the episode soon after picking it up from the dealer though.

I've had this smell periodically just after I got the car. Was quite alarming as it isn't a clutch or brake smell, or anything else recogniseable. I had never had this smell with previous Land Rovers. Occurs after a bit of a run out but not every time so recycle DPF sounds very plausible.
Hasn't happened for a while now.

Sometimes I get a burning smell, worked out it was the heater sucking in air from the outside when someone was having a bonfire or burning rubbish.
The other day I was behind a car towing a caravan up the steep incline at the beginning of the Llanrwst road in North Wales, the car was struggling with the weight of the caravan up the hill and you could smell the clutch burning, which again the heater was sucking in, took about five minutes with the windows open to get rid of the smell. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I'm very mindful of not riding the clutch. Foot is not on the peddle etc.

I do find it difficult to avoid 'clutch balancing' on first gear in slow moving traffic though (esp on a slope). Also, in reverse gear I have no choice but to clutch balance. Is there something I am missing here?

How do you change gear without the clutch? Bow down

This is embarrassing, I feel like a kid learning to drive all over again! Embarassed

Thanks. Is this even with the lever on air circulation vs fresh air? I will check my setting once again.
