Not a known issue. Are you sure you are always releasing the transmission [hand] brake fully? Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. Is it a sulfurous smell? Mileage intervals of around 200 would be the DPF regen'ing, I get nasty wafts of it occasionally when stationary after a cruise. On a separate note mine has a "hot" smell occasionally with the heater on but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a burning smell. Mines got around 6k on the clock now.

Has it had an underseal treatment done at the dealer? It is very easy for some oily wax paint treatment to get onto the exhaust system and slowly burn off. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

When you say you don't think you ride the clutch, if your foot isn't on the pedal you're not riding the clutch and if your foot is on the pedal once you've changed gear take it off
You don't actually need the clutch to change gear, you get much smoother gear changes without by just matching the revs. |

Yes, Zagato did a great job with it a few weeks ago. Doesn't explain the episode soon after picking it up from the dealer though. Last edited by APK on 12th Feb 2016 9:18am. Edited 1 time in total |

I've had this smell periodically just after I got the car. Was quite alarming as it isn't a clutch or brake smell, or anything else recogniseable. I had never had this smell with previous Land Rovers. Occurs after a bit of a run out but not every time so recycle DPF sounds very plausible.
Hasn't happened for a while now. |

Sometimes I get a burning smell, worked out it was the heater sucking in air from the outside when someone was having a bonfire or burning rubbish.
The other day I was behind a car towing a caravan up the steep incline at the beginning of the Llanrwst road in North Wales, the car was struggling with the weight of the caravan up the hill and you could smell the clutch burning, which again the heater was sucking in, took about five minutes with the windows open to get rid of the smell. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

I'm very mindful of not riding the clutch. Foot is not on the peddle etc. I do find it difficult to avoid 'clutch balancing' on first gear in slow moving traffic though (esp on a slope). Also, in reverse gear I have no choice but to clutch balance. Is there something I am missing here? How do you change gear without the clutch? This is embarrassing, I feel like a kid learning to drive all over again! |

Thanks. Is this even with the lever on air circulation vs fresh air? I will check my setting once again. |
