Only if you are happy to sit at the side of the road and wait for recovery, when you need to be somewhere else!

Cheers - so I believe... best part of a grand! Is any damage being done elsewhere though - does the bearing ever give up completely?? Various web searches reveal things like "they all do it" to reports of bearings making that racket from new. I'm reluctant to take apart and replace something that otherwise is working, and the risk of causing other problems. But at the same time, I like things being all in order. |

Actually yeah this was leaking, but have since fixed it about 1.5k ago. The whirring could have started around about the time I noticed the leak... in what way is this related? |

That's what my local mechanic said, but hence my question here is why there is advice around to wait until it all needs doing... |

Mine made that noise since I bought the Defender in 2003. Originally only in cold weather but eventually got so bad it happened every time the clutch was used.
So last month and after 134k Km I had it replaced along with the clutch plate. All fine for now but I'm sure it will start again as its seems to be "normal". 2002 110 TD5 White 1981 S3 R6 Matt Green - Now used as game viewer 2013 Discovery 4 XS |

My TD5 has started doing this when its cold, and like yours, it goes away after a couple of gear changes. I usually hear/feel it as I maneuver the car in the drive to get onto the road. Mine is on 68k, original clutch, 2002 car.
As it is not my main transport, I plan to leave it until I have to do it. If that results in a lift from the big orange taxi, so be it! I don't think driving this until it destroys itself, or the clutch actually needs replacing will damage anything else. Plus it would be a false economy to pull the gearbox (or engine out) to change just a bearing. It would be wise to change the flywheel, clutch plate, clutch cover and release bearing, and whilst I'm at it, maybe the release fork and slave cylinder too? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

Big Orange Taxi?

The rear diff off the Big Orange taxi started maing noise at about 80.000 km and according to the friendly dealer I should replace it. now a few years later at 150.000 km it still makes noise. So I won't replace it till it breaks, of-course that will happen when I need it but so be it. Replaced mine when I rebuilt but I have a feeling it's actually the spigot bush in the end of the crank. Still whines !

It will be the spigot bush in the crank. Something that gets forgot when changing the clutch unfortunately.

Yep 10 says its the spigot bearing. Don't worry about it. Drive it on and stick a nice blob of moly grease on it when you eventually do a clutch.

Thanks everyone - this is all really useful advice.
I think I might check it in though, it's getting worse. It used to do it only when cold (first thing in the morning), the past few days and this evening in particular it 's doing it when the engine is slightly warm now (starting after sitting for ~2 hours), and even heard a slight whuuuuuurp as I clutched when dropping from 4th>3rd slowing down after driving 5 miles or so on the journey home. Also feeling that gear changes are notchier than what they used to be... Spigot bush or release bearing? (I'm getting confused, or it's getting late) bear with me: Engine running, neutral, foot off the clutch, no whirr. Clutch pedal pressed, still in neutral, no whirr. Clutch pedal pressed, select 1st or reverse, a slight hint of a whirr. Start to lift the clutch to maneuver, full on whirrrrrrrrrrrrr! Clutch pedal fully up and driving, no whirr. |
