I want to upgrade the headlights to wipac crystals. But there seems to be 2 versions available. One at roughly £30 and another at £65. There's a little cover in front of the bulb on the more expensive one. What else??? Which one to get?

Right, that's a saving - but what's the difference between them though? Is it just that little cover in front of the bulb?

I have both versions (now boxed up in the garage, as I current have LED´s fitted). The ones without the cap came from a reputable supplier and were listed as Crystals, but are obviously not. They look and worked fine. Excellent beam pattern and no corrosion or other issues.
The ones with the caps came in a Wipac box, and, as mentioned here, were more expensive. The caps don´t seem to make any noticeable difference to the performance negative or positive....but they do , in my opinion, look better. The cap is probably supposed to immitate the classic "Lucas tri-pod" look, seen here, I suppose. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

Ok, so between them, which would you recommend as you have both?
I think I like the cap, I think it looks good. |

I've had the SVX type on my td5 90, they are also on my 110 now and I'll be fitting them to my v8. It's worth getting the stainless rings too.

I strongly suggest neither. See below what I've just posted on another thread: Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto HSE Zambezi Silver |

Yes, but they do have shorter lives by nature, not due to weaker design. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I put Philips x-tremes in my standard lamps as soon as I got my Defender in 2009, as I'd used them in the one before - never had to replace them, so they are in their 7th year, approx. 40K miles.
Definately a slight improvement over the originals I took out (and keep as spares in the cubby), so for the extra few £, a no-brainer. Standard colour (I didn't want blueish tinge). |

Taken from Osram’s Nightbreaker’s data sheet: Highest luminance: up to 90% more light than standard halogen lamps Fatigue free, comfortable driving Optimum light for more reaction time Up to 35 meter longer beam of light (compared to standard halogen lamps) Up to 20 % whiter light (compared to standard halogen lamps) Various tests have been carried out on Nightbreaker bulbs by Auto Magazines using laboratory conditions utilising sophisticated measuring devices the test below was carried out by an independent for Auto Express and cleary shows the difference between standard and Nightbreaker bulbs Osram Nightbreaker unlimited = 101.25m/26M (332/85ft) - 3260K Osram Standard, = 95,25/25,25m (312/83ft) - 3050K I have Osram Nightbreaker’s fitted and can clearly see the difference over standard bulbs. As your evidence contradicts these findings could you tell us where your facts are substantiated from. Osram's very own data sheets:
Original Line Night Breaker Unlimited ECE specs restict the maximum permissable luminous flux so there is no legal way of getting around it. As stated, observed improvements with the human eye are down to the perception of colour temperature vs luminous intensity, since we are all useless at judging the latter. There will be very slight differences in beam due to the smaller filament that are also used to their advantage and results in the above Auto Express figures but that is a tiny difference, and light is lost elsewhere to achieve that. Just to fish out the relevant figures:
