30ltr additional fuel tank for Defender 90
Who has one?

Anyone fitted one for someone else?

Need to know how they fit with other bits n bobs like roll cages and spare wheel carriers etc.

Advice much appreciated Very Happy

Jake at Devon 4x4 will tell you what you need to know on that as they fit it all.

With regards to fuel tank if your cage goes to the rear of the vehicle and the rear hoop is down to the rear crossmember then there will be an issue, something I wanted to ask too for if or when I get round to adding LPG !

Longer range fuel tanks on a Defender 90?

To my knowledge there are no larger replacement main fuel tanks available for the 90.

To extend the range of a 90 you can get the plastic fuel tank available here which is a flow through system.

Also available are after market sill tanks. These are pumped systems into the main fuel tank or you will need a diversion valve. Also an old fashioned under seat fuel tanks.

Will the 30 litre wing tank fit with a swingaway wheel carrier? Yes, depending on which wheel carrier, you may well have to fit the wheel carrier before the wing tank.

Will a wing tank fit with a roll cage. Yes however you may have to do some modifications to the roll cage if already fitted. If you are getting one made best to talk to the roll cage maker prior to purchase of a roll cage.

Davew fitted a wing tank with an existing roll cage however he does have certain mechanical abilities Thumbs Up Have a read here

Forward planning in this case can be useful Thumbs Up I am going to have a good chat with the lads at P & P about our grey 90.

Thanks Brendan, that's just the sort of info I am looking for.

So, if I fit a Nakatanenga wheel carrier that would need to go on first.

Does the tank come with fitting instructions and could I do this myself without a 4 post lift?

A fuel tank under the drivers seat will either need a pump system or a diverter valve system

For a Puma it will also need the relays etc under the drivers seat relocating.

It is easier to fit a wing tank on a four poster as you work at a more convenient height. Can be done with a trolley jack and good quality high stands. Taking wheel off, allowing the axle to droop gives you more room to work.

With the 110 wing tanks I know it will be difficult if not impossible to fit a Nakatanenga wheel carrier after the wing tank has been fitted. I would assume the same applies with the 90 wing tank but I have not checked that one out.

So did I, but you cannot have a gravity-fed one in the 90 unless you are prepared for major modifications.

Mine was fitted when we bought the vehicle brand new in 2010, and is still going strong. Thumbs Up --

it does indeed. I'd be worried if I had bigger tyres though, that one looks like it could suffer from the tyre rubbing at maximum compression. --

Bear in mind that the under wing tank that replaces the filler neck does not give you an ADDITIONAL 30 litres, it allegedly will store 30 litres which is not the same thing...

In practice it gives you around an additional 20-25 litres. When we calibrated the sender unit on our main tank with one of these fitted we managed to get 85 litres into it compared to the 65 litres we used to get into the tank on it's own. This is mainly just down to the fact that you are replacing the existing filler tube which can store around 5 litres.

Interesting Dave, I have never really considered how the fuel tank size is calculated. Just the volume of the tank or when the tank is filled to top of the filler neck??


Yes the plastic tank is a flow through gravity system. Requires major modification? The middle section of the filler tube needs cutting out and a pipe fitting attached to the existing tank.

Have not heard of any issues between the wheel and the tank.

I have one from Safari Equip, the biggest fill-up ever (till the neck) was 85.2 litres.
According to info found on this forum, I have still had 6+ litres in the tank.
