2002 will be a Td5 not a 300 unless its a conversion or ROW import. Personally I find the Td5 the best out of the lot, I've owned 9 and look after a fleet of site land rovers that are abused in the cruellest ways you could imagine and the 5 will run rings round the rest.

What Fayboy Slim said... My 300Tdi was bulletproof and I have been very impressed with my new to me Td5. Just to be clear though all turbo diesel engines until 2007 in a Defender are 2.5 litre displacement. Even the five cylinder Td5. 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Thank for the replies - appreciate the advice!
Think I just needed some reassurance that these things actually are reliable, and that the last one I had was just a bad experience! |

Like I said. I'm on my 9th. Absolutely love them. If I could buy a brand new one tomorrow I'd be camping outside the dealership now. They're not maintenance free by any means, little and often is the key. Keep on top of them and they'll go forever.

I would try to go for the last of the TD5s if possible, 2005,2006 as they had most of the issues sorted. However saying that the TD5 has been good for me and I personally feel it is one of the best engines in the defender and certainly on par with the 300tdi.
I would not worry too much about mileage as these can do 2 or3 hundred thousand if looked after. They are easy enough to service and I would always buy genuine filters with quality oil which will aid longevity. good luck! Tomo |

Depends on how it's been looked after....
My td5 has been superb ... Bought it with Full service history with 68k now got 78k and only Replaced starter solenoid. My 110 300 had 80k and I did about 50k but in that time It had new props front n rear, all new wheel bearings, recon front diff, Recon gearbox and tbox, new head, half shafts ,CV joints, and clutch. My 200di had from 40k miles, did starship miles n that had new clutch and head gasket And that was used and abused. It really depends on how the Landy has been looked after. Good luck with the purchase My moto is " use it abuse it and fix it" it's what they are for Have fun be happy |

Thanks all, I don't mind some maintenance, just couldn't be doing with any uncertainty that the puma experience put into me. This is reassuring reading.
Is 5k unrealistic even for a hard top with no bells & whistles? |

I think with a good hunt you'll find something. I sold a lovely T plate Td5 hard top for £4k a couple of years ago, had 172,000 miles on it but wanted for nothing (I look after my vehicles like babies) and there were people fighting over it for that much. Incidentally the couple that bought it have recently returned from a trip to Africa with it and it didn't miss a beat. Beware the dreamers that want £8k+ for 300 tdis etc.........good luck.

You are trying to buy at the worst possible time - prices are bonkers due to the hype surrounding the end of the Defender. Your budget is also quite low (particularly at present).
Anything second hand can present issues - a lot of the problems you have had with your current vehicle can happen to any engined/aged Defender. If you have spent a lot rectifying problems correctly with yours (ie you are confident that the issues are sorted properly) then it may be worth sticking with it, instead of potentially inheriting a whole load of other issues! The 300tdi was a great engine, and is revered amongst enthusiasts as it was the last engine that was available in an entirely mechanical guise. It is a strong, dependable lump (as is the similar earlier 200tdi) and will last for ever if not abused to the extreme. However, it is pretty agricultural compared to the TD5 (and even more so the tdci), and everything bolted to it from the clutch and chassis back/up still suffer from the poorly engineered and assembled design that is a Defender (as unpopular as that may make me sound!). These vehicles are mega - however, if you are looking to spend £5k on one you need to be either lucky and buy a good one, or be prepared to spend money on issues that might or might not arise going forwards. What you have listed as problems with your current vehicle are par for the course with a Defender of any age I'm afraid - ideally you are happy with the rectifications that you have paid for and I would suggest sticking with the Devil you know... |

I agree with the above but a td5 sounds a lot better. Roel

Agreed with above statement.
If buying a used Landy I always have a fund of £1-2k to rebuild , fix, Improve it so it's reliable in my ownership. When I buy I go over it with local garage and repair or replace excessively worn parts Nearly Always drop a new clutch master and slave cylinder and wheel bearings, and Double check ujs , and on tdi pressure test head .... Just anal I guess lol Have fun be happy |
