I have been experiencing the same and after trawling thro the forum, I have
Replaced the VCV and had it programmed
Replaced the EGR
Replaced the MAF
Replaced the MAP
Replaced the CPS

I thought it had cured but sadly not. Started looking at the electrical side now. Main relay seems a good place to start. Any advice would be most welcome

Well another day and now added new oil Pressure switch, new oil and filter. Fitted new Crankshaft sensor and air filter.

Checked all the wiring found one shiner in the box under drivers seat, it was for the heated front screen relay. taped that up and it seemed fine until today.
I noted after I stuck my tablet on and monitoring the MAF, it seemed to run at a constant level about 20~ then blip going up to 82 then back then a few seconds later the same blip. Is this normal?
Went to BP and filled up with some diesel and seems like its back to the start. Cutting out, no response on accelerator.
I am beginning to lose hope. Where next fuel contamination?

Really struggling here

Any further progress / updates on this - I've had a few splutters / judder / power loss this morning in the cold. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My first job involved driving from Southampton to Wick in a 300TDI (twice)
The experience of 3000 miles in a Defender has never left me (for many reasons!)

Found that the pressure limiting valve on the fuel rail was blown. Came out in pieces so replaced it.
Then took the vehicle to an indie who had previously tuned the pump when I changed the VCV.
They were unable to get the pump learn to run and gave up. Cost £36.
Then took the vehicle to another indi as the LR dealer cannot accommodate me until mid February.
They use AutoLogic and have accredited status with LR, BMW, Audi and Porche.
They complained that the new Pressure valve was not up to spec and insisted I replace it with Ford part. Duly done at £81.
They then were able to complete the pump learn and pilot something or other and called last thing Friday to say all working fine and I owed the £228.
Collected the vehicle Saturday morning and di not even make it to the end of the block. Same problem as when it went in.

Today I had drained the filter and it was clean as could be.
Checked cables and cleaned the contacts on some. Started it up and now the temp gauge is dead. The diagnostics show the engine at 59 C and hot air comes out of the heater vent but temp gauge shows cold.

When I switch on the ignition, the temp needle moves up very slightly but does not register any heat.

I ran a few diagnostic logs and find that Fuel pressure sits for a while then drops off and the engine res drop to about 450 and the whole vehicle vibrates.

I have ordered a new CHT and will fit it when it turns up probably Wednesday Tommy

Well now got it going.
Changed the CHT.
Noticed that the VCV was upside down. Not sure if that makes any difference but since its a real PITA to remove I changed it for a new one.
Took about 4 hours ( Thanks to Blackwolf fro the pm).

It has not turned a wheel for about 4 days, the weather was too bad to do any work. I have to do mine on the road.

Started first turn of the key and idled squarely on the 800 rpm. No cutting out. Revved up and it returned to idle.
Took it for a run up one of the local steep hills and pulled like a train and when stopped, idled happily.

I will take it to the indie on Monday and get them to do the pump learn etc.

Just hope that the end to the 5 months of trouble. Fingers crossed and toes knotted

Thanks to all of you who helped out with suggestions and advice. Testament to the value of this forum Tommy
