EGR black smoke or what
G’day all,
I have a little problem and it is having me hating driving my Defender anywhere on the highway.
I recently changed the fuel filter, fuel pump and cleaned the injectors on my 2.4tdci 2007 to try to get rid of the power loss that sometimes happen. It will drive 100-120kph on the flat and downhill. When I come to a hill say 10% grade it is down to 70-80kph in no time. The black smoke is bad also, my wife is a tree hugger and doesn’t see it I see it. I loved the truck when I drove it in Spain back to the UK, but now back home in Canada she sucks rocks on the hills. In the city she works well as far as power goes stop and go. When she is cold at startup she smells bad and the smoke would kill you for the first 5 mins, that is at -5 to +5
I’ve read the forums and they are all saying EGR I have no code light coming on, I do know that our fuel in Canada is crap compared to the UK/EU.
Could I have put the fuel filter housing on backwards when I rebuild the truck. The in on the out and the out on the in? I don't want to just change parts if it is something simple like a pressure sensor so if anyone has a suggestion I'm all ears?
I’m lost and getting upset driving her but I love her, after all she is a Defender, on the east coast of Canada. Sad day is Friday………but Defenders never die.

Sounds like it's overfuelling, fuel quality shouldn't be do bad as to make things that bad.
Unless it's been tuned?
Run some Diesel additive though to see if a boosted octane rating will help.

The injectors are very sensitive and newly fitted ones need programming.
Also the injector seals can have issues.

Thanks for the information I've done the additive and no change.
It was the same old injectors when back in.
It will work right I know it some day.

Black smoke is normally over fuelling OR restricted airflow, given what you have done I would suggest changing air filter and checking turbo actuator

Could there be any obstruction in the air intake system? Maybe an object or foreign body got in or accidentally left?

I have a similar problem with my defender. It's a 59 plate 90 xs 2.4.

When I start it cold, the amount of smoke that comes out is terrible, and driving it leaves a bit long cloud of white smoke until it warms up, then it disappears. When I put it under heavy acceleration when cold the smoke changes to a darker colour, and when warm, it's clear u top heavy acceleration, and then the usual rich mix smoke.

I have changed the air filter last week, and it's a straight standard 2.4 no mods.

The turbo seems to be working perfectly, lots of power.

Does anyone else have anything similar?

64000 miles on the clock.

Yep, true that. I made the mistake of using diesel from my local village gas station which in a very short time ruined my injector pump. It was only then that it was suggested by the repairer that I should only fuel up on the main highways (in my case the 7) because unless the holding tanks are regularly filled and emptied, they get contaminated with water.
Never did manage to get the engine running nicely after the injector pump rebuild and left the country shortly after.

I add 2 stroke to my TD5 and my VW T5, I did quite a bit of reading up on it beforehand though as I didn't want to have to repair / replace 2 engines Laughing

Sounds to me lke it is generally down on power. 100-120 kmh flat or downhill, is slow, if you mean flat out.
Fuel shouldn´t make that much difference, but there are a number of other possibilities. As mentioned, the purely mechanical aspects need to be checked.

Obstruction in the air intake, blocked injector. it would only take one to cause a sizeable drop in power, and the other cylinders over fuel trying to compensate.. Too much oil in the sump (a recent oil change maybe?). Partially blocked catalysator.

As it is a 2.4, you don´t have the DPF to blame.

Did the problem start directly after the service work?
