Diff wind-up
I have MY14 110, which I use mainly for its towing ability of my Ifor Williams box trailer to and from the South of France. I have never been off road and never had occasion to touch, never mind alter, the hi/low box setting. A few months ago I did one of my trips to France with the laden trailer.
I drove down the various motorways to Dover and eventually onto the night ferry. I drove off in pitch dark and had a dash light illuminating. As I was carried along in the Wacky Races exit of the ferry, the wife looking up the owners book, we discovered it was the Diff wind up warning and she read out the remedy, reversing etc. I pulled into the first rest area, unhooked the trailer and reversed around until the clang of the unwinding and the light went off. I was, however, still totally wound up!
I have tried to find why it did this and how I can avoid this in the future, though it hasn't happened since. The only references I can find relate to low ratio engaged, though as I have never engaged low, I don't understand. I asked at a UK dealership but the guy fully explained re low ratio and explained it couldn't happen in high ratio, so really he wasted his breath. The fact is it happened, can anyone explain? Ive tried to search on here but "wind up" reveals masses of posts, mainly referring to such as wind deflectors etc.

The year before at 3 days after delivery it went into a sort of limp mode on the ferry, after 3 days in a French garage, they could find nothing wrong. 6 months later in the UK it was found that a sensor indicating low fuel, therefore limiting power was not connected fully and could have happened again at any time.

Is it possible that you may have unnoticedley knocked the high/low lever to the left engaging diff-lock? Confused I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Thanks for reply.
No, light came on as soon as I started the engine and I had to move forward straight away, no other light came on. As wife read out the reason and I got carried along in the wave of cars, I fumbled in the dark but all was as it should have been. When I got stopped at the aire, I checked and the smaller lever was as it should have been, I didn't have to shift it and to this day I haven't touched it again.

A couple of basics will help here......
The low range and middle differential lock are selected using one and the same lever next to the gear shift.

The low range and diff lock are two seperate independant mechanisms, and can be selected independantly from one another. Moving the lever forwards selects the low range, and is quite heavy and mechanical to activate.

The diff lock is selected by moving the lever to the left, and is (on Puma Defenders) a very unprecise and "soft" mechanism. It is very easy to accidentally push the lever to the left, with your left knee, thus engaging the diff lock.

The warning light is telling you that the diff is locked. It does not warn you of wind up in the transmission, but if you drive on normal tarmac with the diff lock on, you will indeed "wind up" and stress the drivetrain.

The diff lock should only be engaged on soft and slippy surfaces, when better traction is neccessary. Mud, gravel, snow and ice, for example. I have also used it when slipping boats in and out of the water on a tarmac slipway - but only in a straight line.

Pushing the lever to the right should release the diff lock. The light will only go off once the diff has actually unlocked. So it may well stay on.
Because of the wind up, it may take a little longer for the diff to unlock. Driving forwards or backwards, at best relatively straight, should release the wind up and allow the diff to unlock.

Light off. Diff is free.

Hope this helps........... 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

If severe windup occurs it will normally snap a drive shaft, you will then be unable to drive the vehicle unless in diff-lock,
If you suspect windup jack up one wheel, if it has windup the wheel will spin the minute traction is lost. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Thanks Wild Card.
I'll just have to assume that I knocked it on somehow, but cant imagine how I would and it didn't move when I checked it after the light was on. I'm fairly tall and sort of place myself into position with my left leg going forward toward the clutch! I suppose I then wound it up in my wacky races moments and it needed my reversing display. Hope it didn't suffer, but has been OK since.
Thanks again

Happy to help.

It is incredibly easy to accidentally push the lever enough to select the lock.

On my left hand drive (the selector lever is still on the right)) Defender, my girlfriend pushing a shopping bag down into the footwell was enough to cause the very same thing to happen, a year or so back. As i then reversed into a parking bay, i felt the steering load up and it felt like the brakes were binding. only then did I "see the light" and twig what had happened.

Been there, done that... so to speak..... Thumbs Up 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

No, no invite

But back in 1990 I did go on a Land Rover training course at work, qualified and drove one regularly, an E reg 110 SW, then a H reg. Also owned a Daihatsu F20, T reg and used that off road for a couple of years until it turned to brown powder.

This is the first Defender actually owned and first time encountered what I described.

Best to engage low range every now and again as it keeps everything nicely lubricated and free Thumbs Up Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.

Out of curiosity, why can the diff not get wound up in high range with diff lock engaged? If the centre diff is locked why would high or low range make a difference to it getting wound up?

I've never engaged diff lock in high range so assuming it's possible (can't see why it wouldn't be) I would've also assumed it could get wound up the same way?

High or low range will not make a difference to windup, if you are on hard standing then windup will occur. The reason it is fine on loose surfaces as the wheels have different traction levels the power will go the easiest route and spin that wheel. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html
