Welcome aboard Dan!
I'm not sure how long the lanes will be closed for, hopefully not for too long. What would be the easiest way to find out? Has anyone got a contact for the local authority I can use to see when they expect to open the lanes again? Cheers SG |

Let me know when and I'll join. There are some lanes that are always dry, like those around the old secret WWII mustard gas factory. A lot are TROed until the end of April, but that still leaves lots of green roads. It is an interesting area, travellers in some lanes, dogging in others (that's men who walk dogs without dogs) and mud if that is your thing.

Hi Sgilmoir,
Happy to come along if the dates work out. I doubt all the lanes are closed - only some will be seasonal. Most of the lanes are Forestry Commission so they are not as strict/ bothered as Local Councils. Steve Defender 90 TD5 Station Wagon Discovery 3 HSE BMW 330i Coupe |

Merlin - Thanks for your advice, more than welcome to join us. I'll take the mud, but avoid the travelers and definitely skip the dogging Are the lanes that aren't TRO'd at the moment any good or are they just like tracks with not much excitement?
Stevie D - Do you know which lanes are Forestry Commission? Or is this made clear on OS maps? I've just ordered one for the area so can have a look when it comes in the post. EDIT - Stortford isn't far from me at all so if you fancy meeting up to do some local lanes give me a shout! Cheers SG |

Most of Thetford is sandy and hence dry when other places are wet. Downside is that they aren't the most challenging it the country. But hey it's what we have in this part of the UK. Stortford sounds great, I'm free this weekend 16/17jan16 or even a weekday is possible. I've been around Haverhill and been surprised by the pretty nature.
So what, who and when? Merlin |

The owner of the land is irrelevant, still the council who apply a TRO. Just like anywhere else the only legal routes are those with public rights of way and with no TROs applied.
Illegal off roading is not tolerated, and FC work with local police to monitor this (for example funding off-road patrol vehicles). Enjoy your day out, it's a lovely area. And wash the car afterwards too if you don't mind [/url] |

Merlin - I can't do this weekend (Defender needs some TLC) but will be looking to go out in the next few weeks for sure. I'll give you a shout when I'm lane worthy again. Have you tried any lanes around the Dunmow & Debden/Newport/Clavering area? Some good tracks to go on there but can be a bit tight and scratchy in places depending on how you feel about that?
RetroAnaconda - Thanks for the heads up, I was intending to make sure all lanes were legal before going in any case. I don't want to help the people trying to end our hobby by giving them more reasons. Will wash the truck down after too |

All who want to join this little trip I think I'm going to have to make it happen on Saturday 20th Feb as there are a few bits I need to get squared away on my truck beforehand and don't want to have to cancel it because I haven't managed to if I can avoid it.
Early notice will also hopefully mean that most of you can pencil it in and make it on the day too Let me know and if people want to PM me email addresses or mobile numbers etc then feel free and I can send out more details of the day when I've got them made up! (Hope that doesn't break any forum rules Martin?) Cheers, SG |

Great news Tomcat! Sure I heard somewhere that horse tracks do more long term damage than car tracks because horse tracks don't let water move, they trap it?

If anyone interested, I'd be keen for a day out before this date, maybe a recce, see what's open etc... |

Wish I could but I can't do weekend before because I'm away with the missus for Valentines Day. Weekend before that I'll most likely be getting jobs done that need doing before I go.
If it's a good area to do some laning I might look to do another day in May when all the tracks are open. Might also do a weekend in Wiltshire but one thing at a time... |
