Deep water prep.
With older Defenders, it was quite a straight forward task to prepare the motor for deep water wading, but the TDCi has all manner of added electrics.
Is this a concern?
Is there anything necessary besides the usual fitting of plugs in drain holes, extending breathers and raising the air intake?
I want to be able to tackle flooded roads without any worries.

If a road is that flooded you are worried about being above the limits of a standard defender waiding level I would suggest not to drive it, there are many hidden dangers from submerged trees/vehicles to missing drain covers not to mention the fact you can't see where it is road or ditch.

Biggest problem with tdci is the air in take. It seems to to suck water in. There are quite a few threads on how to seal it.

Have a look under the left hand rear wheel arch at the back and check that the fuel tank breather hasn't perished and split. It is in the firing line for spray from the rear wheel.

Speaking as someone who has already drowned a 2.4,

ECU behind cylinder head
ECU under driver's seat
Central locking door activators & main controller
As above for electric front windows
Heater motor
All fuses & relays needed connection cleaner to make them work

The above needed changing!

Axle breathers, especially rear!
Transmission breathers
Even if snorkel fitted, airbox & filter likely to get soaked!
Fuel tank breather very susceptible to splitting making it an easy access point for water in the fuel! Symptom of split: fuel spill from under vehicle when necking the tank at the pumps

In addition the rear diff & transfer box had to be replaced due to water damage


The above was from a 110USW but is unlikely to be the full list as incident was 4 years ago but gives you an idea of what resulted from a dunking.

The water itself wasn't that deep, maybe 2-3feet and the burn wasn't very wide but was in spate. When I lost traction at the far side, I tried to reverse back only to have the vehicle turn through 90degrees and float backwards down the burn until a tree stopped us.

We then acted as a dam resulting in 3 very wet bums and dammed water just about up to the wipers on the outside and just below the radio on the inside.

Extracation came about 3.5hours later when the level had dropped below the bonnet. But trying to get a shackle onto the towing eye on the bumper was very difficult, you know that bonnet hump is a lot bigger than you think as I could barely reach the towing eye! A rather large tractor towed me out in its lowest gear which is 8l00dy slow!

Repairs cost about £2000 plus the heater, rear diff and transfer box which were changed through 'more official channels'.

Thats more when and how things can go wrong.

Waterproofing to move through water around and or slightly above wading depth and preparing to sit in water not moving are two different things. Mike

Puma air boxes are not sealed when built, the airbox actually has drain holes, take your air filter out and have a look Shocked

all LR airboxes are like that - my 300TDi disco has sealant to seal it - the problem you then get is any water that gets in, cant get out and ive had a small puddle in there before.

So if sealing watch out Mike
