Probably not really an expedition but I'm looking to do a weekend up around Thetford in my '94 300Tdi (I live in Essex and not sure I want to take on the big round trip to the Peak District or Wales yet!). Looking to camp light and spend time exploring green lanes in the area.
I've seen a couple of videos online which look pretty good (I'm not expecting PD or Welsh green lane quality!) but my question to you all is if it is actually any good in reality? If anyone has been around that area are there any particular lanes I should aim for? It was included in the LRO British Isles Adventures booklet as a good are to go laning in East Anglia so I guess it can't be that bad but would appreciate any first hand accounts. Cheers! SG |

I'd be interested in hearing of any gentle green lanes around here too, just for short trips out.

Tomcat - more the merrier! Especially if you have a bit of knowledge of the area.
I haven't tried Violets Lane yet but it's only down the road from me and definitely on the to do list. Got the snorkel fitted after Xmas, just need a few other jobs done and breathers tested and I'll be there. Just not on my own! |

Just down the road from me & very wet at the moment, with some tracks shut down to prevent further damage.
I suspect that grenadier has nightmare flashbacks from the military training he's probably undertaken there... some very serious units get trained there TT "Ease your worries, Clear-up your woes, Go into your garage & put stuff into rows." |

Thetford is a good day out lots of miles to complete, generally not to challenging but does get you away from it all. I keep meaning to go back but don't seem to get round to it.
Violets can be interesting I've only ever done it when its fairly dry, but not for faint hearted when in flood - definitely need a snorkel and no carpets. I would imagine the water can get too big so best to have some local knowledge. From memory it's not possible to turn around - so once you've started you in it... I need to get some under body protection done before I'll be allowed out to play! The Violets sounds a little serious for me unfortunately

TooTall - Thanks for the heads up. Do you know if these are closed for the season and won't be open until April 1st?
Stevie D - If you do get round to it you can always join us! I'll probably look to do Violets once the weather has got a bit better, I wouldn't risk it in full flood. JOW - Are you looking at underseal protection or diff guards and the like? I have a steering guard on mine but have recently been told they're a bit of a chocolate teapot... |

I know some of the lanes around Thetford, when I used to do them on my KTM. In fact, I was going to do a few on my to taking the kids to high lodge today!
I also would be interested in coming along and probably have the routes in my old garmin handheld, so long as nothing's changed since 8 years ago! Nothing too challenging, but a few rutted lanes starting in aound quidenham, then along a short stretch of Peddars way, then cut through the forest, through a big boggy hole which can get a bit deep at this time of the year! Be good to get the adventure out for its first stint!! Dan |
