Really? You are looking for a tyre that is only 10mm narrower with 7.5mm lower sidewall. Surely the 265/75R16 woulkd do in this case, or did you mean 255/85R16? |

Had a set of 265/75x16 on my 90 since last March and in every way apart from off-road grip I regret changing from my old BFG AT's.
The BFG AT's were so competent on-road that I knew they would be a hard act to follow but I had heard such good things about the ST Maxx that I felt I just had to give them a go and for me that was a big mistake. Of course the ST Maxx is a more aggressive tyre so there is no way it could match the tarmac performance of the BFG AT's but I hadn't realised just how big the difference is and here we are 9-months later and I still can't come to terms with it. Show them some mud and they walk all over the BFG AT's but I now do that so infrequently that I have to face the fact that I bought the wrong tyre for my personal situation. Strange thing is, after 30-years of LR ownership you would think that I would know better but I was finally convinced to buy the Cooper's by a major tyre dealer (think of the first 4x4 specialist wheel & tyre dealer that comes to mind) who convinced me that they were a better tyre in every way than the (dearer) BFG AT's I was about to buy.

Just had 4 BFG all terrain KO2's fitted to replace my mud terrains.
It was a toss up between the BFG's & the Cooper ST's. Just fancied a more road biased tyre. Can't really comment on them yet as only put 20 miles on them. I do like the chunkier appearance of the Cooper's. |

What are they like for road noise compared to BFG ATs? Need to change tyres soon and I can't make my mind up.

My personal experience of them is the different to Litch's. I found them on par, if not better than my old BFG ATs on road, especially in the wet. You wouldn't think so being more off road biased. Although the BFGs had got about 20k miles on when I started driving the vehicle, so that may have been to the age. I'd love to try out the KO2 though, I think it'll be far ahead of the old KO on the road with the new comounds etc. I still don't think it'll be as good as the ST Maxx off it though, but that's by design.

Obviously it depends on what upgrades (if any) you've done to your stereo/sound proofing. I think they're quite quiet, and as I usually have the stereo on fairly loud, I don't notice them at all. Open window, summer, there's a gentle (comforting?) hum, but no more. Also, like PCA42 and unlike Litch, I find them very road worthy, given their already alluded to off-road bias. Get the odd drift on tight roundabouts when there's the light rain that brings Tarmac oil to the surface, but that's super rare. Generally find them planted and that's with serious twisties round here, and as Mrs Grenadier knows to her chagrin, just because it's a 110 Defender doesn't mean I won't sometimes drive like Sebastien Loeb. Indeed it is the limitations of the chassis and/or suspension/ARB set up that will fail long before the tyres do IMO. Finally, and it is finally as it's not the most important thing, I do think their sturdier appearance is far, far cooler than the BFGs. But, as with everything in life, it's taste, choice, subjectivity. Horses for courses...All things considered in an impartial test, I don't doubt that 9/10 journos, testers, members of the public would find the difference between them much of a muchness and that they'd come out equal, with a 50/50 split in preference. I think you only see more BFGs because their current iteration has been around longer than the latest and best version of the ST Maxx. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Noise is on par with the BFG AT's (i.e not noticeable). Never found tyre noise to be an issue, certainly some tyres are noisier than others (think howling GY Extragrips that were fitted to the Series MOD fleet) but I have never been bothered by it. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |
