TDS get my vote too. We have run one as rear on RV4 for 2 years now (B2 fitted with airfreespool and extended drum) works very well and its had alot of abuse. We have managed to win Howlin Wolf Class twice with it so it has done well.
(we have got a warn 8000 as a mid though.....) 8274 up front of course. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

OK dumb question: TDS winch - is that a type of winch or a make of winch?
I see "superwinch" make a TDS and so do"Champion" and "Goodwinch". Or are they all the same thing? @confused One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

not a dumb question at all
superwinch are made in the USA Champion are made in China by King One which also makes Goodwinch but Dave Bowyer (Mr Goodwinch) puts his own motor in them and changes the housing to make it semi-waterproof. You do the final waterproofing of the goodwinch yourself at the time of installation. Superwinch has a great reputation. lots of commercial outfits swear by the Husky, for example. if you're looking for one have a chat to dave bowyer, a nice bloke and v helpful, even if you don't buy from him. |

I fitted Warn 8274 with xp motor and albright solenoids to a D44 bumper and have never looked back.
Fully re-buildable with immence power. Combined with plasma rope and a few gigglepin brake upgrades its never let me down. Spare parts readily available. |

I have a cheap old Champion 9.5ti on a famous four, use it maybe a dozen times a year, been alright so far. But it is corroding fast along with the bumper, you get what you pay. for but it's good enough for me. I think it was £495 complete with fitting kit. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

I am currently running a Husky10 because I know when I need it I won't be disappointed.
I also have a 8274 which in the future will be getting the gigglepin twin motor conversion for competition use. I would say the above really covers the 2 situations I will ever use a winch. I doubt I would ever just buy a generic 'average' winch as it does everything..... but it won't ever perform as good as a top notch one. As above Dave is a great guy to talk to and always got the answer (I have used him several times foe Husky parts). Glyn P.S. All the 'Jackal' Vehicles n Afghanistan uses Dave's winches and I have never heard of any failing at the wrong time. |

Just jumping into this one as been toying with the idea of getting a winch fitted.
Can anyone explain the differences between the low profile and bridged models? What are the pro's and con's Cheers Ross 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Low profile ones have a remote solenoid pack. Bridge ones have the solenoid pack in the bridge.
Low profile ones you can fit into the rear cross member and on front of the motor is more discrete. With low profile winch you can fit the solenoid pack in a drier/less mud prone area. One thing about winches avoid the el cheapo ones like the plague. Am not suggesting you spend several thousand £ on a Gigglepin superfast super strong one. When you need the winch you want it to work and not just groan and die. One thing I sometimes get shouted at is when I say things like do you actually need a winch. Needs and wants are different things. Remember a decent winch set up can cost a lot of money by time you throw in a decent winch, winch bumper, winch accessories possible twin battery system etc you could be talking up to a couple of thousand pounds! Buying an el cheapo one can be false economy. Brendan |

Brendan, cheers for the advice.
Your totally right. Do I really really need a winch? In all honesty no. Do I want one? Yes. But handy to have just in case. Also agree you get what you pay for. Whilst I love the idea of the Warn powerplant, I just cant justify the large price tag. So will more likely plump for the Goodwinch offerings having seen how many recommendations its had on here. Where have people mounted the remote solenoid? Ross 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Rear winch, the solenoid pack is inside the rear door sat on top of the rear wheel box.
Front winch the solenoid is inside the engine bay high up on one of the inner wings. I run twin Warn 9.5 winches on red 110 using plasma ropes. Carry a 30 metre plasma metre extension line which means have a 60m reach on a single line pull. Never had to use that yet! Prices on Warn winches has gone up steeply in last few year, however I would advise avoiding el cheapo winches. Brendan |
