Personally I reckon the chances of getting a dealer to undertake seperating the transfer box and adapter to check the condition under warranty 'just in case' would be very slim. Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Generally you can't, until the moment when there is (usually) an assortment of very destructive noises and a complete cessation of forward movement! You need to be alert to excessive transmission backlash, but on the Puma Defender this more-or-less comes with the vehicle from new and is more likely to be diffs, halfshafts, drive flanges, transfer box, and clutch than output shaft. There will be backlash before the output shaft fails, however, so if you become aware of backlash and know that all the more easily accessible parts are OK, then be suspicious of the output shaft. I would say that you have absolutely no chance at all of getting a dealer to visually inspect the coupling under warranty, since LR won't authorise this as warranty work. They will repair it under warranty if it fails though. |

Well, just to counter that, mine was replaced and greased under warranty without it failing first. The tech that collected it when it went in for the oil pump repair said he could feel it. I wasn't going to argue, and more importantly the warranty bods at jlr must be happy for it to be diagnosed in this manner.
Maybe suggest it to the service manager, and see what he thinks, he may agree and get it done. If it's stripped and done, nobody will be any the wiser. |

^^ Wow, lucky fellow, and full marks to the dealer!
I have never heard of that happening, but it proves that it can happen. |

Now this sounds like I am taking the pi55, but bear with me!!
There is a breather hole at the end the shaft cover section, between main gearbox and transfer box.. Try poking a damp string or bendy cotton bud type "thing" into this hole, and see if any of the "magic red dust" sticks to it.. Blasting an air duster in at the same time should agitate things sufficiently to see the results!! Gotta be worth a try, as it only takes a few minutes.. ... ,-------, .. I [__][_]|__ .. It can't come with it fitted since it fits the back of the gearbox. It may, however, be supplied with the kit, but not having bought the kit I don't know.

Its fitted to the new aluminium bit if i understand it correctly, if you look on the ashcroft website the picture shows it better.

You'll still need a new seal for the gearbox output shaft.. The new bit comes with a seal to stop the self lubing splined shaft leaking.. ... ,-------,
