Yes you're right. It's not a genuine LR Product but what I mean, it was not adapted by the owner. So as you've mentioned, easiest way is to plug it into the alternator. But I need to buy it first, cause it is away from where I live. What I need to know is, if the rev counters used at normal diesel engines are interchangable with turbo engines? Without any tune up with an ossiloscope.
Cheers. |

Yes providing the rev range on the dial is appropriate to your vehicle. All it does when connected to the alternator is count pulses as the alternator rotates, it doesn't matter if it's non turbo or turbo.
VDO make a nice reliable rev counter that should match well to your existing gauges. HTH Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

South African Spec 300tdi vehicles had a rev counter. So there is a genuine part available. 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

There is a 'Tdi' version of the Td5 style rev counter, which is for the RoW spec TD5 Defender that was factory fitted with a 300Tdi engine - its part number is - YAE100800
This rev counter is driven by the 'W' terminal on the alternator, and matches the TD5 gauges perfectly, in style and illumination. It's not cheap though ![]() http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/9512...i_defender ![]() There are a couple of places that list it a bit cheaper than Brit-Car. . Hi again,
Does someone have the code number of appropriate vdo rev counter? I'm a bit confused between these two statements from forums. VDO 333-156 0-4000 rpm limit. The VDO 52mm 0-5000rpm rev counter will work on either the V8 or 300TDi from 1996. I Believe 0-4000rpm is not good for 300TDI, but I don't the others code no. Cheers. |

Hi PaulMc,
It is so expensive ![]() Here I can buy complete dashboard from early '90's diesel engine for around 50£. I'm not sure if it could work fine though.

Hi again,
I bought a brand new 0-6000rpm vdo (WWG 333 035 017x) My alternator is probably magnetti marelli. Could someone please confirm that the screw shown in red circle is the W terminal. ![]() Click image to enlarge Regarding the tachometer, it has three switches numbered as 1,2 and 3. Not like as 4,5,8 which refers to cylinder numbers. Default setting is #1 is on. Shall I keep it as it is? Cheers and wish you all a happy new year. Last edited by schweps on 26th Dec 2015 6:58pm. I'm not 100% sure, but I think you are right re the w-terminal.
Re the coding switches on the tachometer, I think #1 on is the (default) setting for a four-stroke petrol engine. For a diesel engine you have to set a code with the switches according to the number of impulses per revolution. I think #2 on, 1 & 3 off might work for you. Thanks for your reply VeeTee,
Unfortunately there was no instruction manual in the box. But the document you've linked will be useful. Cheers. |

Attached two different alternators seems to have additional small black box connections that I don't have.
Does anyone knows why? ![]() ![]() |

Probably an interference supression capacitor. Cheers, Vincent

Do you think it depends on the model (capacity) of the alternator and applied by the manufacturer or a modification?
