Side Illumination.
Hi guys,

I have recently signed a lease on a new place!

Lots of up sides, the main one being undercover parking area.

The down side is that that parking area is very narrow. 2 Brick columns at the entrance and 1 mid way down the space, not in line with the ones at the front. It is completely un-lit with no way to add in any lighting because its a rented property. Oh, and there is about an inch and a half each side of the mirrors and you have to reverse in at a 90' angle.

So I'm thinking that when I get home in the dark its going to be a bit of a nightmare to get in and out of.

To make the process easier I am thinking it would be a good idea to add some side illumination.

I like the look and spread of light from the Scene lights available from Mud but they are very expensive once you have bought one per side, wiring and switching. Are they really worth it?

Does anybody have any bright (Rolling Eyes) ideas? Or reconsiderations? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Surely, even if rented, you could bung up some LED/strip lights with surface laid, HD cable to a power point? A few quid all in from B&Q? (Other DIY retail outlets are also available....) Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

My solution to a similar need for outstanding all-round area lighting was to fit four el-cheapo Cree LED light units (about £25 per pair)pair from Ebay) with flood beams. One light is on the roofrack on each side over the second-row doors, the other pair are mounted on modified mirror arms on the rear, so they can shine backwards, sideways, forwards alongside the vehicle, or forwards inside the vehicle. Although technically illegal to use as reversing lights on a public highway, I've never had any issues. They're also handy if towing on narrow roads since they illuminate the trailer, so I can see it in tight places and oncoming traffic can see it (also illegal, of course).

When they're on, the vehicle is in the centre of a fifty foot pool of light.

They're also excellent off-road at night, camping, or working round the vehicle. They also use very little current so can be on for long periods without the engine running.

One of the most useful mods I have made.

I'd like to fit a scenelite down each side eventually, not a cheap solution though!

The Labcraft scenelights aren't cheap. Whelen are good quality. They're what's fitted to most emergency vehicles...

You need an account. I have one if you need me to order some lights.

Thanks guys Thumbs Up

Sadly there is no scope for adding any lights to the building as there is no power outlets at the parking end. Bit of a pain really.

Thanks for the links guys, £35 makes much more sense than £95.

Just need to work out a way to mount them as I cant quite fit a roof rack on top Big Cry Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I wish I'd known about them before fitting a Labcraft light, oh well!

shaggydog: you can get slimmer lights that don't stick out so far depending on how much light you need.
From Mud again:

For building mounting, have you considered solar powered ones? You can get ones with a remote solar panel so the light is where you want it and picks up useful sun, somthing like this:

brighter ones are available, I'm sure other places do them too.
