Is this normal?
I've taken a gamble and bought a high mileage 2007 defender with no history.
I'm having trouble getting to grips with it, but I've not driven another one, so i'm not sure how it ought to be!

First gear seems so low that when I pull out into fast traffic, i run out of revs just as i cross the "give-way" lines, as soon as i dip the clutch it looses momentum as if i'd hit the brakes. I find it safer to pull off in 2nd gear.

The engine won't rev above 3000rpm in any gear.

At low revs the motor lurches, it's difficult to drive smoothly.

If i cane it, it flies up to about 85mph but, living in London, that doesn't happen much!

I got 32mpg from the first two tanks of fuel (i don't know how it's doing now though as the speedo stopped when i disconnected the tachograph),

I changed all the oils and filters and cleaned the mass airflow sensor when i first got the motor.

I'll book it in with a LR specialist when i can, but any feedback in the meantime would be appreciated.
Cheers

Im pretty surre if you have no speed trace feeding the ECU the engine limits the revs.

Certainly other cars do. I cba going out and thrashing mine on the drive to find out.

Try fixing the speedo and see if that cures it.

I eventually gave in and took my motor to Harris-Mayes in Rickmansworth (thanks to "familymad" for the recommendation).
They found two issues:
Unreliable MAF sensor
Faulty clutch switch

It turns out that there's a micro-switch on the clutch which is monitored by the ECU. When the clutch is depressed the engine is limited to 3000rpm. WTF!
Surely this isn't really neccessary and could be bypassed to prevent the problem again? I wonder what other electrical liabilities there are that could be removed the increase future reliability.

BTW: I haven't sussed out the tachograph/speedo wiring yet)

Just a guess. You might find the RPM limit with clutch depressed is to save the thrust bearings in the engine. Redlining an engine with clutch down is never really a healthy thing to do.

Glad you got the issue sorted.
