Autobox fluid is red
Same stuff used in your power steering too - its basically hydraulic fluid. I would say looks like some blue grease which has got hot and run out of the gearbox. Good lords, surely not a sign they are actually greasing the input shaft adapter is it??? I have the exact same issue, on a landmark. Just above the box where the forward prop shaft meets gearbox\transfer box. Dealer off for xmass.

Nobody's got a definitive answer yet to what it is?

I'm pretty sure it is some sort of assembly fluid. I wiped mine off nearly 600kms ago & it has not come back. The underside is now pristine & leak free for the moment.

I had oily fluid dripping down on my carport floor for a couple of days. I think it was protective fluid as it was particularly evident below the side runners, so not near any mechanical components. I assumed it was part of preparation for the sea voyage to Oz. There was also a lot of heavy black oil brushed onto some areas, esp. inside the rear wheel arches, which I cleaned off.

The dealer looked at the blue fluid coming from the transmission area today.
They have never seen a blue lubricant in a defender. So they strongly believe it's a lubricant used to grease a transmission shaft within the manufacturing process and therefore not a problem. They also mentioned that they had had another new defender with the same problem. They just cleaned the grease up and there hadn't been any further leaks. Personally I can't see it being lubrication for the shaft?
I've had a few of these out now, and if they are greased there is no way the grease/fluid can escape and leak out. The centre section of the shaft housing is a sealed unit bolted between the main box, and transfer box. The grease supplied by Land Rover is silver in colour, and will never run out. The blue fluid looks more like a thread lock consistency, maybe used on assembly? I would be very suprised if it was shaft lubrication! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

As this is not a standalone case, seems a good question to ask Ryan from Customer Relations. Did Solihull change something in the last months of the assembly process, and if so what and why?
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

It is oil, had my land mark on the road for a week, it was leaking from the transfer box. Dealer had to drop the transfer box and re seal they sent me pictures ones it was out to show me what they were doing, they said they didn't stock this special oil so had to get in touch with land rover.
