Help with Fluid leak
I just changed the rear brake discs, pads and wheel bearings. In one side when I removed to hub I had quite a bit of dark grey almost black fluid, it wasn't thick, come out of the half axle track. It did not smell burnt and there has not been a slow leak but it sure didn't look right. I cleaned everything up and changed out the wheel bearings and did the disc and pads. The axle stub looked fine but I am thinking there may be a seal behind the axle stub that is bad and rear differential fluid is able to come through. I did change rear differential fluid about 6 months ago.

Any thoughts.

Do you mean the liquid came out of the stub axle where the half shaft is? There is a seal inside the stub axle which seals around the half shaft to stop rear axle oil from migrating into the hub bearings. Some owners remove this seal and use rear axle oil to lubricate the hub bearings instead of grease. Provided that the axle breather is clear a slight amount of oil passing the seal is not really an issue. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Ricky,

Thanks, Yep out of the stub axle along the half shaft, with what you said and what I just looked at in the workshop manual you have hit it dead on. Thank you for the insight. I'm a new owner so I want to take care of things and I wanted to make sure it wasn't and emergency and it won't do significant harm. I will order a seal and do it after Christmas.

I love this forum.

Rob
