Cruise Control Light in Puma Instrument Cluster
Hoping the electrically minded boffins will have an answer?

I've installed a Terrafirma CC unit (TFCCK07) and it has been 4 months of pleasurable driving.
The one nagging issue I have, is to have an 'operation' light in the instrument cluster when the cc is on. I've contacted the manufacturers (Lindgaard-Pedersen) and they have given me the details for wiring the external LED from the controller box.

Trawled the web and found this picture of a Disco3 cluster, which I thought was the same as fitted to my MY12.
So was going to use the existing cc light on the cluster, Plan A.

But after opening mine, it is not the same
There is no printed icon, nor LED in that position (#01 & #02).

So Plan B, use the "120km/h" in the centre screen (#03).
But cannot figure out which pin number on the connector for the cluster supplies this LED - LED106 / C106 (#04).

So my questions for the electrical boffins...
Plan A - is it possible to wire in an LED (preferably an RGB LED) & what pin(s) on the cluster supplies the power?
Plan B - what pin(s) supplies the power?

I've looked through the MY12 electric wiring diagram, workshop manual this forum and trawled the web, but cannot find any answers.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated, otherwise I'll have to head for Plan C - wiring an LED into and engraving one of the switch blanks on the centre console. I know this is the easiest option, but will always look odd to me and I'm sure I'll need that switch in the future.

Hope that I've been making sense...
Thanks

Totally over my head, I'm not sure i even understand the questions so certainly can't help with an answer, sorry.

I do however wish I was in Botswana with my 110!!

When I wired in cc to my td5 I used the 120kmh light, it lights up yellow and quite bright. In my td5 I seem to remember that one of the pins at the back of the cluster needed to be earthed to illuminate the light. If you can solder pbc then I'd recommend changing the led to green as it's less irritating to the eyes at night Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

You could always just use a resistor to dim the warning lamp rather than make a mess resoldering the surface mount led.

Thanks to all for the tips and advice... Thumbs Up
Looks like for now it will be Plan C, unless I get some time in the festive break to sit down with the cluster and figure out which pins link to which LEDs.
Will post pics when done... Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Broadly speaking they are "Disco 3" instruments, however they are internally different as you have found and not functionally identical to the D3 pack.

What is your Plan A? You mention fitting an RGB LED but where?

Plan B is possible, if the 120km/h warning is triggered externally rather than by the cluster itself when the input speed is over 120km/h.

I think it may be the latter, with the overspeed warning enabled in the vehicle's config Sad

In theory you could modify the cluster to add a wire to the 120km/h LED to allow it to be triggered by your cruise control unit.

How does the cruise control unit want to control the LED, with positive voltage or ground?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The 12MY workshop manual confirms that the overspeed warning (120kmh lamp) is "self controlled" - i.e. the cluster itself determines when to turn it on.

Whether you want to modify the cluster to enable external control is up to you. I imagine you need only provide a ground to the LED to switch it on.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The cc triggers the light with the ground, so it would need just 1 wire from the cc unit for Plan B?
The instructions from the manufacturer...

Plan A, was to get an RGB LED (which no-one has here in Maun, so looking to use a spare green LED that I got for the heater cluster lighting for now, but will also be going through children's old toys to see if I can find a 12v RGB one) and mount it in the same position as it would be on a D3 cluster, as there seems to be enough space on that area to not mess with the rest of the circuit board. Then get the card laser etched with the cc symbol, this is how I converted other oe switches for rear 12volt power sockets and spotlights.

And now posting the second picture, I may just have solved my LED issue...
Now where have a stored that switch?

Martin, thanks for the tips and are you able to tell me which number pin on the back of the cluster would go to the "120" led or for Plan A?

Hi Jason, yes you would just need the 1 wire from the CC unit onto the cluster PCB.

Very neat laser etching of the button caps Thumbs Up  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

So I've ended up chickening out with playing with the pcb.
Simply had a blank engraved with the cruise control icon and used the insides of an old switch for the illumination.

Me too.

So to all you electrics boffins, I would like to change my hazard switch from the central one pictured above to one that will fit the other standard switch holes.

Bought a Disco 2 switch which is the right size (although not sure if it is illuminated) but takes a different plug at the rear. Any thoughts on how to convert or an alternative switch?

Thanks in advance.

Stiff, find someone breaking a disco 2 and get the plug from the harness. They are starting to be broken now that the chassis have dissolved 😊
