I don't think that you can use an ECU in a defender that has been used in a disco.
A defender ECU has also the cruise controll programmed in you just need to connect some switches. A stolen schematic off Bell Autos Services. You can use ANY TD5 ECU in ANY TD5 car. It will run the engine, at least.
To start the engine, the TD5 ECU must be paired with AS10 (in Def) or BCU (in Disco2) or must have removed the imo function. To run the car, you need to set correct type of throttle pedal - 2 or 3 ways, or it will just idle. To run engine for long time, more than to closest specialist, you need proper software (map) in the ECU - basic differents are Defender/Discovery, manual/auto gearbox, Euro2/Euro3 engine. To run engine smooth you have to set the injector codes - just try rewrite them with engine running - it will not stop, but when you change some codes to the right codes engine noise will change to a nicer and smoother one. The injector codes are only for correction of non perfection on injectors (manufacturing tolerances of injectors) - basically it is used for slight shift of time of start and stop injection. With wrong software in ECU there could be strange thinks like wrong working temperature gauge, or not good response to throttle pedal - this is "just" cosmetic problem. Bigger problem cam be wrong injector timing when you use Euro3 ECU with Euro2 engine and rise of exhaust gas temperature - not good for turbo. But again - for short slow and calm move to specialist, this is not a problem. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufÃnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo |

Hi all I Tryed the second hand disco ecu on the defender and a friend coded in the injectors for me and it still will not start is it possible for the discovery ecu to need the immobiliser software removed before it will allow it to start or could there be another fault ie with the starter motor or the alternater wiring will have to take a look in the day light

Has the cut off switch on the bulkhead deployed? Try pushing the button back in and see what happens Ray

In Def or Disco2 you have to pair the engine ECU and IMO ecu (AS10 in Def, BCU in D2). Without this, starter motor will be turning the engine, but without any diesel from injectors, because the engine ECU not commanding them.
You can check the status of engine ECU with diagnostic - if it is or is not immobilized. With IMO function removed from the engine ECU, there will be no communication between engine ECU and AS10 (or BCU) and also less one safety function in car. And door locks in Defender are not so good, more like a demo then proper locks. http://ok2mtm.rajce.idnes.cz/2014_07_17_-_...oru_TD5_-/ - I made some pictures - How to check the TD5 ECU security status with Nanocom EVO last year for my friend with not running car in Namibia. It worked, problem was not in ECU. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufÃnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo |

Why not just replace with a defender ECU ?

yes, you can start any Td5 with any Td5 ECU.
You need to allow the ECU to learn the 10AS or BCU (disco). You need diagnostic equipment to make it happen it's in the ECU functions. If you swap the 10AS to another unit and then try to start the engine, it will put the ECU into immobilised and even if you put back the previous 10AS it will still not start. In this case, the ECU will allow cranking, but the immob light doesn't come on and you keep cranking and wonder why it doesn't start. Hi I went with the discovery ecu mainly because of price of a new one is about £700 from my land rover dealership and second hand defender ecus I cant seem to find any second hand ones And for £30 I've not much to lose. Hopefully going to get it recovered to the specialist on Thursday with a freelander

Hi, can you tell us what you had to do to get the disco ecu to run in a defender?

I tuck it to the land rover specialist but they coded in the injectors and the disco ecu had to learn the immobilizer ecu this can only be done with the computer there is a security code you need which is inside the ecu write it down and enter it when you are asked for the code to start learn I did not do this part my self and that how they done it from what I could see you can not take out the disco software as a result the temperature gauge does not work I don't know why this happens

temperature gauge is driven by ECU if you can check to see if the ecu is reading temp from the sender to start with and go from where
temperature gauge out put from the ecu can also be switched off Last edited by dorsetsmith on 22nd Dec 2015 8:23pm. Edited 1 time in total |

There are 2 main differences between Disco2 and Defender TD5 ECUs:
1. temperature gauge in Discovery2 works in opposite way to that in Defender - this is more or less cosmetic problem, car runs fine 2. throttle pedal response in Discovery and in Defender are different - if you place Discovery ECU into Defender, it works nearly as ON/OFF switch - car runs, but it is not comfortable on road, and difficult to use off road - it is hard to precisely control the engine. All ECUs can be changed from Discovery software to Defender or back. Newer types with diagnostic equipment, older with soldering internal memory chip. Third big difference is only for Discovery2 - with auto gearbox there are some additional circuits in the TD5 ECU to communicate with auto gearbox ECU over CAN line.
