Yea it got flooded its the engine management fuse the 30 amp the 3rd one down from the top. On the dash the glow plug light and the engine warning light flicker and the green relay is clicking like mad then the fuse blows and the fuel pump stops I have un plugged the fuel pump and the black plug by the clutch master cylinder its the harness for the pump so i guess the wiring is ok, and it still pops I have an ecu coming to day I assume it will have to have the injectors coded in before it will start?

I have repaired some TD5 engine ECUs after swimming with car. If there is water in the ECU, remove it from car, open (remove both lids carefully) and look for burnt part inside. After drowning the ECU it is normally good visible, what has burnt. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

My original ecu and fusebox.
![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge I had to change a little more too. But it runs fine now. ![]() Click image to enlarge Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Not good look of ECU internals. If it is just mud, it can be repairable. But if the ECU was drowned for long time connected to power, electrolysis can make too bit damage. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

You'd think for something as imnportant and fragile as the ECU, that they'd seal it up!

There is another problem - sealing is not enough. Just imagine the change of air pressure between sea level and 5000m above. There must be something to vent the internal according the outside air pressure. And second problem is condensation in closed space.
Easy but not cheap solution is to ad more conformal coating on the internals - the silicon like stuff on the board. There are at least military standards for this. But it is not easy and not cheap. In Discovery2 there are a bit more of ECUs, one is BCU, responsible for central locking, lights, wipers immobilizer and lot more. From factory it has no protection applied and it is in plastic box. Lot of these are damaged by corrosion from condensed water. But it is cheaper for manufacturing. ![]() ![]() |

Thankyou for all the information I have got a second hand ecu from a discovery this morning and the fuse has stopped blowing once I plugged it in, I was too late to get it to the garage for them to code in the injectors I will have to tow it to them one weekend

Be careful with ECU from Discovery placed in Defender. Engine will run, this is not a problem. But with Discovery software in ECU there will be problem with temperature gauge - it will run in opposite way and with throttle pedal - it will work more like an ON/OFF switch - not nice to drive.
If you have new type of ECU - like NNN000120 or NNN500020 it is possible to write the right software (map) with diagnostic equipment (like Nanocom). With older ECU - MSBxxxxxx it is also possible, but only by desoldering original EPROM memory from the ECU and soldering a new one. But for testing it is not a problem. My experience is the TD5 does run and can be driven with the wrong codes for the injectors.
I've recoded a couple of them after injectors got swapped on head gasket changes for folk who lost track of the injector order. It mainly effects smooth idling and optimal performance. Cheers, Kyle. Last edited by Alien on 13th Dec 2015 12:07am. Edited 1 time in total |

If you do use the Disco ECU does that give you the ability to add the switches to gain cruise control?
I've read if it being done but that is the extent of my knowledge of it. Edited both posts as it was annoying me ![]() Kyle. Last edited by Alien on 13th Dec 2015 12:08am. Edited 1 time in total |
